365XD PCMCIA failure

Hi.
I've got a Thinkpad 365XD. It runs/boots fine, but it won't recognize any PCMCIA cards that I insert. From reading on other sites, I know that the problem is that the machine was put in Standby/Hibertnation mode with a card inserted. I need to restart the laptop with that card inserted, but I don't have that card anymore. Does anyone know of a way to reset this? Will reinstalling the operating system work? Is there some easier way of erasing the stored information about what cards were present when it was last used? Any help would be appreciated.

Just a shot in the dark, but can you uninstall the drivers for it, reboot, and then reinstall the drivers?

do you mean uninstall the drivers for the card i don't have anymore? or uninstall the drivers for the slots themselves?
i'll give both of those a try and see what happens.

Sorry, yes I meant the drivers for the slot itself, but removing the drivers for the card might help too.

no luck with uninstalling the pcmcia slot drivers. when they were reinstalled, the problem still exists.

I'm running Windows 98SE.

That sounds a little funny. . . what kind of card are you trying to install now that isn't detected?
Do the pcmcia controller entries in device manager look ok? Do they have yellow !s? What exactly are they called?
What was the card you had installed before, that you don't have now?
Do you have cardsoft entries in your config.sys?

Try this: Boot into Safe Mode. Then, go into Device Manager. Manually expand all the plus signs, and you will see what's on your computer now, plus whatever used to be installed before. Hopefully the offending PC Card will be listed there. Delete it. Re-boot normally and see if the problem goes away.
If it doesn't, I'd repeat the drill (boot into Safe Mode, etc) and I'd delete the PC Card drivers, too. Re-boot normally and then re-install the those drivers. If you still have the problem, then I'm not sure what else to try...???
