600x 8EU Only Detects 128MB of 256MB

I got this RAM off eBay,

Brand: Micron
Capacity: 256MB
Part #: MT16LSDF3264HG-10EE4
Chip Configuration: 32Mx64
Type: 144 pin SODIMM for laptop computers
Speed: PC100 100MHz
Latency: CL2
Low Density
Double sided with 8 chips on each side (Total: 16 Chips)

However, it's only being detected as 128MB! I tried putting it on either slots and used the BIOS "Initialize" option but to no avail.

The BIOS reports that I have "320MB Total Installed Memory" but only "256 Usable Memory". The sticker even says 256MB so how come only half of it's capacity is being utilized?

Is your first (original) chip a PC100 also?

If it is a PC66, then the system will most likely only detect half of the second stick.

I'm only using the lone 256MB stick (together with the built-in/soldered 64MB that came with the 600x).

Is it possible that the onboard ram or anything in the BIOS has been disabled? also, it's possible that the chip is defective, you know what they say, SH*T happens. try another chip, if you get the same problem, then your motherboard might be bad or improperly configured.

Hope this helps.
Regards.

Make sure your BIOS is at the latest revision.

256MB available is not using half. It's using 3/4, which is just wacky. It seems like your original 64MB is not being used.

Can you run the machine with just the internal memory?

I would try PC-Doctor's memory test and maybe memtest86 to do a thorough test of both the internal memory and the new stick.

My bad. When I place a lone 256MB stick, it should have 320MB total. However, I only get 192MB. When I put the 256MB stick together with a 128MB stick, the total should be 448 but I only get 320MB. If I don't put any stick at all, it shows 64MB. Hope this clears it up.

Just try to exchange the memory ships from one slot to another slot. I have 2x128m memory chip, one is 133mhz., the other is a 100mhz. And my thinkpad detects all the memory only if the ships are in a certain combination.
Good luck.
