770ED Charging Issue

I got my old 770 back from my parents, and it's in good shape except for the peeling paint and the fact that the battery doesn't work when it's in the main battery bay. It works from the 2nd bay, however.

Is this controlled by a chip on the motherboard, or is an easy fix?

I'd like to get this working because it is a newish battery with lots of life ahead of it.
