600x - 1600 x 1200 using external monitor

#1 Post by Biggs » Wed Oct 26, 2005 11:15 pm

I have a 19" LCD connected to my 600x's 8EU's monitor output. If I go to the Display properties page, there's no option for a higher than 1024 x 768 resolution. Is it possible to get 1600 x 1200 using this setup?

It is not possible.

With 4MB video memory, you should be able to do 1600x1200 with 16-bit color, but I don't think the driver will support it, and I'm not sure the video chip will either. I think IBM supported up to 1280x1024 externally.

I have a 5FU with XP and Linux on it. I'll boot it into Linux, lie and say I have a 1600x1200 display and see how high that will go.

You should also try turning off "Show only display modes that will work" or whatever the option is called in the XP Display control panel.

You can view the list of resolutions the 600X video card is capable of producing on the Overview - ThinkPad 600X page from IBM/Lenovo.

As Whizkid suggests, the max external resolution is 1280 x 1024 -- and that is with 256 colours at 60Hz. I think this is true under Winoze 98/ME/2000/XP.

To get a better resolution, you could purchase a SelectaDock III docking station, and a SelectaBase 600 base, and then install an old PCI video card into the SelectaDock III. But this would turn your small laptop into a huge desktop. For an idea of which video cards you could use, check out the Dock III Unofficial Graphics Card Compatibility List.

Are there PCI video cards (that will be placed in the SelectaDock III) that will support 1600 x 1200 through DVI-D? If yes, please recommend a few.

I don't know. The only cards I know about are the ones listed on the unofficial list linked above. I am in the process of trying to get an nVidia FX5500 256MB PCI card working with a 600X in a SelectaDock III, but am having some difficulties and can't say yet whether such a setup can be made stable or not. The card I'm testing has S-Video out as well as DVI-something.
