Beating the 600E Max Memory Horse

Hello,

As mentioned in an earlier post, I have received a 600E 2645-8BU. I understand that with a BIOS update the machine will accept 256mb of low density memory with a maximum of 544mb (256x2+32). According to the forum the memory should have 16 IC's (8 on the front and 8 on the back). These seem to fit the bill but I am hesitant to purchase them because the company has a crappy return policy.

Here is a link to the parts data sheet. (It is a bit lacking in technical specs but shows 16 IC's).

What do you guys think?

That looks like the correct type to me. 8 chips on each side.

Don't settle for a crappy return policy.

Go to a local store where you can return them, or try them out first. It's not difficult if they sell used parts. (I got mine used from a local shop for $45 recently.)

Or go with a good vendor like Kahlon, who sells that part pretty cheaply ($64 today), guarantees that they work, and will refund the price if they don't.

Patriot's memory selector does not show a 256MB part for the 600E, but Kahlon's does.

Of course, you can always buy from Crucial or Lenovo too.

Thanks for the great suggestions. I will definitely check those places out.

It appears that the 256mb modules have the same part number as the ones for the 600X. Can I assume that if I can find a 256mb module that will work in a 600X that it will also work in my 600E. The reason I am asking is that most venders with memory configuraters cap the 600E at 128mb but have a 256mb option for the 600X.

There is sooooo much to learn :?

A 600X module should work in a 600E with the latest BIOS, but most vendors will not guarantee it. (My guess is that a lot of 600E owners have no clue how to update their BIOS, and a vendor doesn't want a lot of returns from them.)

This first thing I did when I received the 600E was flash its BIOS to the most current
rev, well after I bought a new battery ;). I am much more comfortable working on desktops because they seem to adhere to industry standards. Unlike notebooks that are almost entirely proprietary and more difficult to tinker with.

After doing a quick search on eBay and froogle, I think I will take your suggestion and purchase the modules from the store you suggested. Unlike eBay sellers they will guarantee the product to work and also give it a lifetime warrantee. For me that is worth the extra $$.

Whizkid, Thanks for your help.
