770z won't boot
error 301, 163, 173
in thinkpad diagnostic testing it hangs on memory and hdd1
has win98, would it be a good idea to load win2000 or xp? which would work best?
while trying to do a clean install of 98 it wouldn't detect scsi cdrom

You could try replacing the CMOS backup battery, then go into the BIOS setup menu and enter the time and date. While this may fix your problem, I have a feeling that your 770Z may be ready for the computer graveyard.
Generally speaking, if you use SCSI devices, and you are trying to install the Windows operating system, you have to press F6 when the option is displayed briefly on screen at the beginning of the install. Then you insert your SCSI device driver diskette (floppy) for the system to install the SCSI drivers. Note that you would have to boot up from a Windows Startup diskette (floppy), and copy the SCSI drivers before your CD drive would work.

Updates and more questions
It does ask for the date and time everytime it tries to boot! For some reason or another it boots sometimes. Like twice in twenty odd times.
I'm definately going to look into cmos battery, but I didn't even know they exist so /any/ help with that is also much appreciated!! The memory check finally did complete and was ok. HDD1 did not check out though and came up with this error
dev 017
err 80
fru 6010
Will replacing the battery fix that too? Oh, and can I do the scs1 drivers without a floppy drive? I only have the cdrom.

Here is the link to download the Hardware Maintenance Manual for your 770Z. In it you will see a parts diagram and disassembly procedures, along with part numbers for ordering. Just put the part number in Google, Pricegrabber, or e-bay to find sellers of that part.
Hardware Maintenance Manual (January 1999) - ThinkPad 770
The error codes you see listed are also in the manual above.

I don't know of any other way until the operating system is loaded.smanke42 wrote:can I do the scs1 drivers without a floppy drive? I only have the cdrom.

Here goes...
So I checked out the manual and here's the fix-it list:
1. I'm going to try resetting HDD1
2. Then try replacing the backup battery
3. Then try a cmos download from IBM
4. Last attempt, replacing the system board
I'll let you know how it turns out... wish me luck!
