Blue screen after transferring data to new Travelstar drive

When you get a chance, perhaps you can offer some advice on the error message that I am getting after when attempting to upgrade a thinkpad to a larger hard disk drive. Below are the details.

Please let me know what I need to do to transfer the data properly.
The ideas that I had:
Was there a problem transferring the data?
Is there a problem with disk itself so I should send it back?
Note: the new drive ran quieter and the startup screen appeared faster so in all other respects the drive seems to be running normally.

Starting with this laptop: IBM Thinkpad 570 Type 2644-3AU

I installed the latest ( I think) BIOS from IBM IMET65WW 11/11/99

Following instructions in EZ-Gig users guide (1999, Users Manual Ver 1.3)
Its an PCMCIA card based kit with a dongle that connects to the new drive. Somthing like this only an earlier version: http://www.apricorn.com/product_details.php?ID=226
(I had used this kit in 2001 to xfer data from a 6GB to an 18GB drive successfully.)


I transferred all data from a working 18GB hard drive (IBM Travelstar Model DARA-218000 18.14GB ATA/IDE 4200RPM)
to the brand new target drive: (Hitachi Travelstar Model HTS726060M9AT00 60GB ATA/IDE 7200RPM )

As far as I can tell the kit used
BIOS to access the drives if possible (rather than direct IDE access)
LBA access mode (rather than revised ECHS) for drives over 8.4GB

Neither drive has any jumpers attached to the pins (as far as I can tell, they did not come with any jumpers either)

Specifically I inserted the transfer utility disk:
EZ-Gig transfer utility Version 3.41 into the floppy drive, then turned laptop on.
Both source and target were recognized by EZ-Gig so I pressed Y to transfer the contents.
I used the default settings from Apricorn for
Big drive translation (assisted LBA vs Revised ECHS) and the default for
IDE/BIOS: BIOS/IDE direct

The \ symbol spun for a while (2-3 hours) while data (18GB) was transferred.

Then the text appeared saying
Elapsed time 24min 00 seconds.
Data has been successfully transferred
Remove floppy diskette turn computer off and install new drive.

So I installed the new drive and turned computer on.

The OS selector appears (dual boot windows 2000/linux) and I selected windows 2000
Then the text based windows 2000 starting “thermometer” meter appears and it the indicator moves to the right as normal
Then the next windows 2000 professional graphical splash screen appears informing me that windows is being loaded.
When the indicator gets to the halfway done point the following error appears:

Error is blue screen
**STOP 0x0000007B (0xF201F84C, 0xC0000034, 0x00000000,0x00000000)
INACESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE

..Check your hard drive to make sure it is properly configured and terminated
Run chkdsk /F to check for hard drive corruption and then restart


I have rebooted 4 times, with the same result each time.
I tried selecting linux instead of windows and the letters LI appear and nothing else happens.

I have reinstalled the 18GB drive and it appears to be working fine.

There is nothing inherently wrong with the Hitachi 60Gb 7200-rpm drive today. I have one in my T41 and am using it right now. It needs the newest firmware to co-exist with the IBM AirBag software, but if it is new, it probably does.

Do you know for sure the 60Gb drive works in your 570? If you have an install/recovery CD, you could install the 60Gb in your 570 and attempt to build it with whatever recovery tools you have. Then see if it runs, and if the 570 recognizes all 60Gb. If this doesn't work, you need to determine if the 570 will take such a large drive. The drive may be faulty.

If this test is inconclusive in your mind, try to find a friend with a newer T machine who also has recovery CD's. Ask said friend to temporarily install the drive, recovery and check the firmware level. If the drive is working, this test *will* work.

Assuming the drive works and the 570 supports it, then you need to determine if the transfer software you are using will support the very large drive. Some earlier transfer software did not support large capacity drives and would not build them properly.

Personally, I would be very surprised if EZ-Gig was able to do all the translations needed in this situation - not only is it a big change in drive geometry but it is a dual boot system.

Try installing an OS on the drive fresh and see if it works - if so, you probably just need to rebuild the system fresh and then transfer the data over manually.

Acronis True Image was able to clone the drive's partitions

turns out the version of EZ-Gig I had was too old to recognize the linux partions.

I did find that Acronis True Image was able to clone the drive's partitions

Thinkpad 240x

hey guys, I am experiencing a similar problem with my Thinkpad 240x (I love that little guy). I originally had a 20GB harddrive with w2k on it. I bought a 60GB harddrive and used a T21 to install w2k on the 60GB harddrive.

But When I put my new 60GB harddrive in my thinkpad 240x, it gives me the blue screen of death saying "INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE"

I will post a link to the picture, but any help is greatly appreciated.

I have updated to the latest BIOS a couple months ago, and I understand that the 240x's BIOS may not recognize a harddrive greater than 60GB, but I set my partition to 20GB when I was installing w2k (from the T21 - borrowed from a friend).

You should check first to see if the drive is recognized.

1. See if you have a drive shown in Easy Setup diagnostics.
2. If the drive exists in the Diagnostics, next try to see if a Windows 98 boot disk running FDISK sees the drive. If you have formatted in in NTFS, the partition may not be recognized, but you should see the drive.
3. If the drive exists on Win98 FDISK, try going back into Easy Setup and reinitializing the computer.

Running a smaller partition on a drive that exceeds the BIOS limitation will not circumvent the limitation (that only worked in the "bad old days" of DOS). Either your computer will recognize all of your hard drive, or only the bit of it that exceeds the BIOS limitation (e.g. my Thinkpad 760 only saw 100KB of an 8.1GB drive).

You can run drives over the BIOS limitation using some commercially available overlay programs. These load into the BIOS first to make it recognize all of the larger drive.

hmm, do you think I could use grub or lilo to be able to see my win32 partition? I don't mind doing that, I was going to make my laptop dual bootable anyways.
