760xl hdd upgrade question
760xl hdd upgrade question
Greetings, I want to upgrade a 760xl hard drive to 20gig. Will my hitachi plug into the caddy ? Will any damage occur ? Are there any special preps that have to be done ? Someone told me that some pins or wires in the cable must be modified. This true ?
Thanks for any help .

The 760 laptops used a slightly different caddy for hard drives under 3gb and for 3gb and over. If you have a caddy for a 3gb or larger drive, then the 20gb should work just fine. If the caddy is for a drive below 3gb, there are four pins you'll need to cut, you can either cut them on the hard drive or jst the caddy.
However, before we even cover that, to use any hard drive above 6gb in the 760 and still have it fully recognized, you'll need to make use of a hard drve overlay software. You can get some information on that here:

760xl hdd upgrade question
Thanks a lot for the info. I do have a 3 gig caddy. Just downloaded the hitachi manager. Will be installing linux so the manager may not be needed. Was really worried about doing damage by plugging into the caddy.
Thanks again !
Thanks again !

in more detail ,if you remove the last 4 pins on ibm (sub 3gb) adapter,(adjacent to the csel, sec jumpers, it becomes fully functional as the 3gb + adapter, however if one can manage to source ibm disk manager software which was blatantly removed from the download section,(despite pathedicly listed as available for download,(de slothfull gimp)nor available online at hitachi too (sloppy too ,but atleast it states this on their site.
regardless the software works a treat. (i reckon its a deliberate ploy to lure people to trash their pcs for a new replacment by depriving them of tools that can give an older pc a new lease of life(decrooks)look under google for ibm disk manager
and you'll find a link from japan that delivers the goods
i cannot understand why the hell do these companys rid something thats proven and usefull?and refuse to participate in recycling pcs, thus reduce gobal warming, about time they snap out of it and foster people to upgrade if possible.
