I do recommed HITACHI 5k100 40G (5400, 8MB) or 7K60 60G(7200, 8mb) for 600E. Plus 128MB*2+32MB on board =288MB memory

Do you find that the 7200 rpm drive wears down the 600E's battery any faster? All the "manufacturer" replacement drives seem to only run at 5400 or less.

Also does the 7200 drive need any special treatment for installation? or is it pop-in and play?

yes, no special, just put it in harddisk caddy and use.

you know, since these things are so old, I thought the price for part would be lower. I was shocked to see that some people were selling a processor for 2/3 the price of the whole system.

Yea I agree, but it just depends on the part and how strongly it's needed to run the computer. You can run it without the little plastic cover for the hard drive or a key on the keypad, but without a CPU, you've got NOTHING!

That's why I suggested you just buy a complete motherboard or a complete lower base. It may cost a little more, but you are getting more parts for your money.

Ok, just got my TP600 in the mail. It's a 2645-41U. Is this any good. I also bought a stick of Kingston PC100 128MB SODIMM. I think the density on that stick of memory is 16x64. Would it be backward compatible?

The 2645-41U is just fine. Are you adding the PC100 to another PC100 stick? If so, you MIGHT have a problem detecting all of the memory. The PC100 sticks do work, but tend to have problems when trying to max out the system, where they only detect 50% of the second stick.

Is it in the first or second slot that only recognize half of the memory? I read from somewhere that people are overclocking the onboard 32mb, making it run at the speed of 100mhz instead of 66mhz.

It was the second slot that seemed to be affected. You might want to search through the forum and see if there were any fixes. I have been rather forunate myself, and haven't run in to this problem with any of the TP600s that I have maxed out. I think that the 41U was one of them, but I can't say for certain.

Oh well, I guess can live without that 64mb. Heck, I am glad that I even have a laptop to type my school papers with. I just hate being at the school library, having to bear with the noise from the others around, and being restricted to use their computers for 1 hours per session.

Again, you might want to search the forum, or even test it out. It is not a given that the second slot/stick will only read 50%. You might not even have that problem.

Oh crap, reads only half of it. The other slot was fine, but this slot in the front only see half of it usable.

i ran a celeron 433 mmc2 on tp 600e +despite half the cache it seemed to run alot sharper +cooler than the p2 366,no other mods needed.
