Overclock potential (MMC-2 CPU)

Overclock potential (MMC-2 CPU)

#1 Post by stevezasycho » Thu Dec 08, 2005 10:49 pm

Okay guys.. Been a few.. I just scored on eBay a speed-Step'd main board:

SpeedStep Board

I know the MMC-2 850s are impossible to find affordable, but the 800 and lower seem more abundant.. Question I have is how reliable are these things when they are overclocked? Remember I am wanting to run Windows XP pro, Adobe Photoshop CS2, Premiere and Mozilla.. THat is about it.. It is more for casual fun than hardcore career.. I just want to dabble in this stuff as a hobby.. SO basically, I am wondering what my options are as far as OCing the CPU to maybe the 850-900 MHz barrier..

Another one I have is if the BIOS can be written to recognize more memory.. THe max for an X I think is something like 576 MB.. More is always better.. I just would like to know if more RAM can be added..

One last one, so I don't need to start 3 threads: Wireless cabability. Is there a way I can build it in the same way current manufacutrers are doing it now? I am curious to see if this is possible.. Thanks in advance guys! 8)

Actually, if you read through the sticky at the top of this portion of the forum, you will see that several people took their 600X up a notch, specifically whizkid (gotcha this time whizkid  )

There is some very informative information in there.

Also, I believe that you are correct about being topped out at 576MB for the memory.

Oh yes, I did read through that sticky.. I was mainly looking for in depth info on the subject, and some personal stories of those who have done it was all.. 8)

Yeah, that one I did. I bought internal antennae and a card. It didn't give me as good a range as my PC card (my house has metal siding and I couldn't use my ThinkPad on my deck with it) so I took it out.

There is room in the cover, but you have to take apart the entire machine. It might be worth your while, but I wouldn't do it again.

I haven't dabbled in overclocking, as I think it's just a bad idea... and I am an electrical engineer. I'm not saying you can't do it, or it won't work. My time is just too valuable to risk losing work on it.

As for memory, I've never seen PC100 SO-DIMM with more than 256MB RAM. PC133 is available, but I've never known that to work in a 600X. I don't think it's a BIOS limitation, but that would be the easy part of that puzzle.

If you really want a faster CPU and more memory, the easy solution is to buy a T40. The older T's are larger than the 600's.

T40's, while newer technology, and lots faster, are also lots more $$. T23's and more plentiful, and there are enuff of them out there with warranty still left on them. The only problem(may not be to some) to the T-series higher than T22's are the requirement for PC133 memory. T21's and 22's can be upped to 1GHz and still run PC100. I am more partial to the -23's for the 16MB vidram tho. But if you've got the bux to spend, yeah, go for it..

My personal 600E runs at 810Mhz with a MMC-2 750 module has 420Mb of RAM, a 4200rpm HD and is FASTER than my desktop! Desktop is a biostar motherboard, Celeron 1300 overclocked to 1.6Ghz and it has 384mb of RAM ATA133 and a 7200 rpm drive. Go figure...must have all to do with the great 440BX AGPset the 600E/600X uses.

My personal goal for my 600E is to have it running at 1.03 Ghz like the T series max with a MMC-2 850 and a FSB of 117 or 118 using a second clock generator chip wired to the one in place.

My only problem with these [censored] 600E's is that no one can figure out a permant way to enalble to the AGP! I made a thread to look into it but it just died so I guess no one cares.

Making a fast 1 GHz laptop for under $150 with 576Mb of RAM is big news

remember your overclocked CPU is only as good as its cooling or your knowledge of what your CPU and computer is doing

I am aware of cooling.. If this is smething I do, I will devise some sort of advanced chip cooling mechanism.. My first 600 was a P233 MMX.. I upped the ram to its max of 288MB, and added a 12GB TravelStar (THe reliability of these drives is falling into question to me currently..) It kept pace with my Athlon 1 ghz w/ 7xx MB ram.. So I can only imagin what a boost in CPU performance can do for this machine.. I am merely curious.. I want to start at least with a 750 MHz or an 800.. That shuld give this baby a nice kick in the shorts..
