TP600 cpu and fan

Does this thing have some kind of heat issue?
Mine seem to run kinda hot, even though it's only a 233mhz mmx. It's pulling out very warm and smelly air after being on for less than one to two hours. I also notice the speed of the laptop drops when the heat comes up.

Might need to just open it up and blow out all the crud that's built up inside. These TP's do get somewhat hot but don't have the smell that you describe. Good luck.

You can go here and d/l MobileMeter, a frequency and temp monitoring utility. Will tell you right away if the cpu is overheating(sounds like it might be). Normal idling temp oughta be about 50C or, it may peak at 85-90-ish C with heavy CPU(DVD, video player) use.

Thanks, I'll do that right after I get my hard drive and install an OS. Right now I am just playing around with linux live cds.

I have a TP 600 2645-85U I usually run Almico speed fan, but it works best on dells, I am running this moble meter, great little App, the only instructions I can find are in Japanese, wich of the the three temps is wich? I assume the top is CPU, then what are the othe 2, and can I change the name of each temp?

Crash Maniac, how did you get speedfan to work? I have a 600E and have been trying to get the program to work for some time because I have heat issues.

Maybe I should have been clearer chris, I dont really have it working per say, I can get temperature readings , but unfortunately I cant get fan speed to change not at all and I tried mobile monitor last night and its results match speed fan's results, (except for the battery data witch will be useful for checking battery wear) so Ill stick with almico because it gives you a nice systry Icon I just wish I knew exactly wich temp was wich, I get four temps right now under a normal load, IE is running(2 windows) , I get for temps 24C,37C,21C, and the forth I know is the hard drive (S.M.A.R.T. capable) 32C,you would think the hottest is the cpu right? I dunno because they both fluctuate, and will be the oppisite one hotter than the other, any body know the difference?

normal idling cpu temp should be mid 50-ish, can peak as high as 80-85-90 depending on the load on it. Passive cooling(reduced speed) is at 95C with shutdown at 96C. My T23 is running at 56C right now. My 900MHz (Dr. vonFrankenPad) T20 idles at 70 and peaks at 95C. My two other T21's, (800 & 900mhz resp.) idle in the low-mid 60'sC and peak at 90C. Never worried until it either shuts down or I see the temp hanging(sustained) at 85-90.
HDD temp's... I never really worry.. right now, 40GB Hitachi is 45C just typing this, so I figure if it get to 60-70, then I start to watch it..
With your laptop off and cool (off for several hrs), turn it on, let it sit for 5 mins or so, check the CPU and HDD temps with no load on it(other than startup) and note it.
Next, use the laptop for some games (Doom, Quake) something cpu intensive (rendering, etc) for an hour, and note the CPU and HDD temps. Add 10-15% to HDD temp. Safe range should be anything in between. If you -really- gotta know, do a search for your particular HDD model and look up the specs.
