Upgrading my TP 770

After reading "The offical 770 upgrade and general information Topic" from this site and further research on the Pentium II chip from the Intel site. I have several questions. When you answer the questions please provide details.

First the original system: ThinkPad 770, P 233MMX (512KB), 32MB, 4.0 GB drive, 13.3 XGA TFT, Win 95. 9548-4Y3. I was informed by IBM it is a RRC model and not a 4Y3.

Mods: added 128 MB memory for a total of 160 MB and installed XP Pro SP2.

Bios: IDET38WW

All other drivers have been checked and are up to date.

Question 1: Can I update my processor? What would it take?
Question 2: Can I update my 4.0 GB drive? What would it take?

Don't hold me to it but I believe you can only go up to 400mhz, the max for MMC-1 but if you change mobos out for a 770X or 770Z which have MMC-2, you can go upto 750 - 850, something like that.

As for hard drives, I know you can at least go up to a 40gb in your 233mhz 770 as I can see my wife's from here and that's what she's got. (It'a a real dog on XP (228mb ram) but isn't used for any power computing.)

Ok, are there any caveats for R&R the motherboard? What was the make and model for the hard drive? Were do you get the motherboard and hard drive besides EBAY?

For the hard drive, you can either google for them, or check the For Sale section of this forum. You can easily use about any 2.5" laptop hard drive, as long as it is 12mm thick or smaller.

I'm not sure what you can do about the motherboard, unless someone happens to sell one here.

Actually, the 770 hard drive caddy will hold 9mm, 12mm, or 17mm drives. The 770 originally shipped with a 17mm high, 2.5" wide notebook drive. It was probably an IBM branded Hitachi Travelstar, but might have been something else. In any case, tfflivemb2 is right that you should be able to use just about any hard drive in there provided that you have the latest BIOS updates. Without the latest BIOS, you may or may not be able to use some of the larger drives (i.e. 32GB and up), I don't know.

My mistake, I thought it was the same size as the 600 series.

Intel only made the MMC-1's to 400MHz, above that speed, you have to move to the MMC-2's..
