FIRST PLEASE EXCUSE MY IGNORANCE AS I DONT REALLY KNOW WHAT I AM DOING-I NEED TO UPDATE THE BIOS ON THIS UNIT THAT I AQUIRED ON EBAY- DO I HAVE TO HAVE A FLOPPY DRIVE ON THE LAPTOP TO DO IT(I DONT HAVE ONE)IF NOT PLEASE EXPLAIN TO ME HOW TO GO ABOUT IT-I HAVE THE FILE I NEED ON MY DESKTOP RIGHT NOW AND THE THINKPAD HAS A CD-ROM ON IT.AS THE TITLE SAYS IT IS A 2645-55U WITH WIN ME

When you downloaded the file it should of said whether or not it was for a floppy drive. It probably was, however there are Bios updates that can just be launched. You should check the IBM website for a update that doesn't require a floppy drive.

Unfortunately, with the older series like the 600E you have to have a floppy, as the BIOS files specifically reference the A drive. Although, I believe that there are people that have tried to hack the BIOS update files to change the reference, but to my knowledge, no one has done it.
Newer models will allow you to download and install without a floppy, through the software installer.

You might be able to do it if you have access to another machine with a floppy and a CD/DVD burner. You'd have to create the BIOS update disk, then create a bootable CD/DVD using the floppy as the source image. You can get used floppy drives for your machine off eBay for about $10 shipped. I consider a floppy a necessity for all my machines.
