TP600X and Windows 2000 and networking...

#1 Post by Edward Mendelson » Mon Jan 09, 2006 10:29 pm

Just a quick note to report what everyone here probably already knows...

After getting more and more annoyed with my ThinkPad 600X (650MHz) running Windows XP with painful slowness, I was tempted to sell the computer at last - but then I thought I'd listen to people here who reported that Windows 2000 is the best operating system for this ThinkPad model. Sure enough, they were right...! Windows 2000 is fast and reliable on this system, and I can recommend two network cards to make the system complete:

For wireless, the Sony PCWA-C800s a/b/g card (sometimes available on eBay). This card has a folded-up antenna so it extends only a few millimeters from the computer case, and its software is reliable and easy to use.

For wired networking, a 3Com Xjack card - this fits under the Sony card, and you can pull out the Xjack connector so that you can connect an ethernet cable without removing the Sony wireless card. It's just about an ideal setup, with almost nothing extending from the machine.

Anyone try a USB 2.0 card with a similar setup?
