Thinkpad 600 - 40gb harddisk upgrade trouble DISK ERROR

#1 Post by cyberfilmmaker » Wed Jan 18, 2006 6:35 pm

Hi there,

I am upgrading the hard disk of my
Thinkpad 600 (2645) with a 40GB Travelstar 5K100.

Somehow I couldn't install WINDOWS XP. After the install process
I would get a DISK ERROR .

I installed WINDOWS XP using my Thinkpad T20 and the disk worked fine.

Back inside the Thinkpad T600 it stops again with a DISK ERROR message.

Do I have to upgrade the BIOS (current: 9744147 09/25/98 ) ?
Will 40GB 5K100 drives work in Thinkpad 600?

Many thanks for sharing your wisdom.

That is not a BIOS identifier. Your BIOS will be identified by something like "IBET54WW" (version 1.22). I have no idea which BIOS you have, but in order to run XP on a 600, I would recommend updating the BIOS to the latest level. More info about the latest BIOS for the 600 is available from IBM/Lenovo: Symptoms corrected by the latest BIOS update - ThinkPad 600 and from BIOS Update (Diskette) - ThinkPad 600.

Also, when installing a new hard disk into a ThinkPad it is recommended that you format it in the same ThinkPad you will be installing it into (i.e. don't format it in your T20 and then move it over to your 600). I'm not sure this would be an issue, but the recommended practice eliminates that as one possible source of a problem.

Yes, they should work, but it is possible that you need the latest BIOS (I can't say for sure).

Thinkpad 600 40gb hard drive update trouble

#3 Post by cyberfilmmaker » Thu Jan 19, 2006 12:41 pm

HI PKIFF,

many thanks for your help.

I installed a 6gb and 12gb hard drive with Windows XP SP2 and it all worked fine on this Thinkpad 600.

I am just wondering if the 40gb size needs the Bios update or if this drive is too fast?

Looking forward to all your thoughts on this issue.

All the best

Thinkpad 600 - Seagate 40gb hard drive problems - bios

#6 Post by cyberfilmmaker » Wed Feb 08, 2006 12:40 pm

Hi,

I never had your error message.

Just make sure your BIOS is set up correctly
and starts/boots with your CD ROM drive
and try to install a clean WINDOWS (a] format/b] partition/c] instal ect).

I had to do it many times.

Some manufacturers offer their own software tools to install a new harddrive.

I hope it is not a SEAGATE compatibility issue?
IBM Hitachi Travelstar
is very often recommended for Thinkpads.

All the best

thanks...

i just initialized the bios correctly, followed by booting from win2000 disc!
beginning was just fine but than interrupted with "no harddrive found" windows cant be installed!

i really dont know what to do..maybe an older version of bios update!

[/I hope it is not a SEAGATE compatibility issue]
do you think that is possible.i never read something about this, but there shouldnt be problems with ULTRA ATA100?! this is supported by my 600x isnt it?

thanks

Thinkpad 600 - 40gb hard disk problems

#8 Post by cyberfilmmaker » Wed Feb 08, 2006 1:05 pm

Hi,

have you disconnected the power supply and well as the battery after you upgraded your BIOS?

Have you tried to install WINDOWS XP, just to see if it works?

I don't think the brand of hard disk is an issue...

Make sure you have a look at:
http://www.seagate.com/support/disc/

Maybe somebody else has some wisdom on this issue.

Good luck,

Thinkpad 600 - 40gb hd

#10 Post by cyberfilmmaker » Wed Feb 08, 2006 2:03 pm

Yes after the bios update you have to disconnect all power sources
and than reconnect them.

You can still do it.No big problem.

Very often when you add a new hardware (eg CD ROM drive/new harddisk ect) you must do this as well.

It's like turning down your PC.

Maybe that's it.

Good luck.

For the BIOS update on a 600X, you should be using the following update file. It's not clear to me that you have been using the correct BIOS update for your 600X. I see this update fixes the following.
Symptom corrected by version 1.11 - ITET55WW

* (New) Microsoft Windows XP Support
* (Fix) OS installation failure with CD-ROM boot
BIOS Update (Diskette) - ThinkPad 600X

You also have the option to use the Windows BIOS update utility, which does not require a floppy disk, however it can only be used with:
This release supports the following operating systems:
- Windows 95 OSR2 or later (See known limitations section at bottom of this page.)
- Windows 98 and 98 Second Edition
- Windows 2000
- Windows NT 4.0 with Service Pack 3 or later
BIOS Update (Non-Diskette) - ThinkPad 600X

Maybe you need to revert to an older BIOS version. I think I read that some of the new BIOS updates check to see if your hard drive is from IBM/Lenovo. The older BIOS versions probably don't check for this. There are links to some of the older versions on the links I posted above.

I had the exact same problem installing a seagate drive in my desktop. Apparently seagate does not send out some of their drives ready to go out of the box. unformatted? unstructured? no volume label? I do not know. Here's what I did.

Go to the Seagate website and look for the Diskwizard installation utility. It gives you different options for setting up your new drive. Once I ran that utility on the new drive, it installed normally as I would expect it to. I had to boot up on my old drive in order to "initialize" the newer seagate drive. I don't know how you are going to manage that since you only have one drive bay. You might have to boot up to a startup disk using a floppy then run the utility is DOS if they make a non windows version. I don't know why the seagate drive I had did not just "plug in" as one would expect. Here is a link to the utility I had to use.

http://www.seagate.com/support/kb/disc/ ... _dwse.html

It looks like they do have a bootable version for you to use. I installed the Hitachi drive first mentioned in this thread and the OS has no problem identifying it during installation. Are all Seagate drives like this for installation? This was my first time installing one.

how did u manage to initialise the drive??

the only thing i initialized, was my bios!

since the bios doesnt recognize the harddrive the disk wizard of seagate doesnt finf the harddrive, too!

hmm..im running out of ideas..think about stop all this and try to get another TRAVELSTAR hd..so hopefully there are no probs!

thanks all!
