IBM thinkpad 600 died after wrong Voltage

#1 Post by metro2005 » Thu Jan 19, 2006 7:00 am

My first post here on this forum, i hope anyone can help me with the problem i'm having with my thinkpad 600, it's a 300Mhz PII processor version.

I wanted to connect the notebook to a power converter in my car. Only thing is, i accidentaly got the positive and negatives wrong, this means the chip / converter thingy on the mainboard is now fried.

Is there any way to fix this or should i ritually bury the mainboard..

It's only one tiny chip that has bursted and was fried, i think it's some sort of power control chip.

I'm not using the battery at all, so i wouldn't mind if i would skip of de-activate any charging circruits.

I hope there's a workaround to fix my stupidity

Bummer! I did that twice when my 770 was under warranty so IBM replaced the DC-DC board. Unfortunately, I don't believe your 600 has a seperate power board. If you are comfortable soldering small surface mount devices, what do you have to lose, try replacing the fried chip. If not, or that doesn't fix the problem buy a used system board.
