New to the forum,thanks in advance.

Got an i1400-2611 (us spec) and managed to upgrade to a 20gig hdd and winXP. I cannot get my Edimac WiFi card to work. In one slot it locks the thinkpad completely and in the other the card does nothing (showing ok in device manager) can any one recomend a wifi or at least a network or usb pcmcia card that will work.

Sounds like you might have a device conflict. I find that with most ThinkPads, or at least most vintage ones, it usually has one or two devices that don't get much use, such as the serial port, disabled to free up resources for other devices such as CardBus and PCMCIA.

As for card reccomendations, I have a Belkin F5d_6020 802.11b PCMCIA card in my 600E and it runs perfectly. I've also used that same card without a hitch in several 760's, a 380ED and a 755CD. That card I would reccomend to anyone.

I also have an SMC 802.11b CardBus card that works on my 760ED but since that card is so troublesome to get working and set up, I would be very reluctant to reccomend it.

there are no conflicts showing in the device manager. I have disabled both the serial and paralell ports and still no joy with the wifi cardbus card. Why would one slot lock the system and the other not?

does anyone know of a 54g card that has proven usable on an old thinkpad

Hi Colin, welcome to the forum!!

Have you tried uninstalling the drivers for the wireless card and then reinstalling them.

As for preference, I agree with AlphaKilo470, I wouldn't recommend SMC. I have had so many problems with the 3 SMC cards that I have.

I personally recommend Linksys, as I haven't had problems with them connecting.

I've used a D-Link Aircard when staying in a hotel with wifi. Sorry, don't know the model number, it's theirs, not mine. After setting it up once, it worked again when I stayed there again a month later. My nephew states he prefers Linksys, but I have no experience with them. 2621-441. Good Luck,

I found that a friend had a spare BT voyager 1020 card lying around so I gave it a go and now my old i1400 is on the net and updating its copy ow windows as I type ! It is only an 11b card but it works and it gives me hope that I can find an 11g card that will work also.

BTW anyone know what is the largest Hard disk the i1400-2611 will take. I have the latest bios. At the moment I've got a 20gig in there but was looking to upgarde.
