Problems Loading New BIOS on ThinkPad 770Z

I am attempting to load Windows XP on my 770Z. I understand that you first need to install the updated BIOS. I currently have BIOS version 1.01 (IOET19WW) installed. I am trying to upgrade to BIOS version 1.05 (IOET23WW).

I am following the IBM ThinkPad 770Z System Program Service Diskette instructions. I formatted a 1.44MB floppy disk and then copied the BIOS file I downloaded from the IBM website (spsdio23.exe) onto the floppy disk. I then insert the floppy disk into the floppy drive and turn on the computer. I see the blue IBM logo and the ThinkPad logo on the screen. I then get the message “NTLDR is missing Press any key to restart”.

My questions:

1. Does it matter if I have a hard drive with an operating system installed (Windows 2000) in the ThinkPad when I am attempting to load a new BIOS version?

2. I read that I must have a charged battery pack installed to complete the installation. On the LCD display above the keyboard I see the display read 98%. So I believe that battery pack is charged. Could this be the problem?

3. Any suggestions? Am I doing something wrong?

Nevermind I read the directions again and this time I followed the directions. I needed to run the .exe file to build a bootable disk not just put the .exe file on a floppy disk.

The operating system makes no difference when updating the BIOS as the software does not read the hard drive. As for the battery, the BIOS will not install without the meter saying 100% though there is a workaround to this if I'm not mistaken. I think the workaround is mentioned elsewhere in the forum.
