Ok everyone that posts thanks for yalls help.

Ok well yesterday I was fighting over the IBM THINKPAD 600X with my bro then he dropped it. Now when I boot it up it booots up into the windows startup menu.

Ok here's how it goes.

turn it on
boots inot thinkpad screen (that says hardware and stuff) the only thing it says though is 1390564 or something KB it makes a beep I can press F1 and get inot the little menu

then goes into the 98 windows screen wait a couple seconds I hear like the harddrive making like clicks ??

then it boots into the Windows Startup Menu

it says "Warning Windows has detected a registry configuartion error" then it says somehing to boot in to one of the options

I really help quick, my parents are going to get mad. I took out the harddrive then put it back in, NO USE!

please help I really need it

Check the FAQ for error codes.

I hope you and your brother have learned a good lesson from this incident.

Sounds if as when he dropped, something damaged the specific part of the harddrive that stores the files for the registery.
If you can, try running scandisk.
Other than that, get a professional to start recovering data while you still can.

Go to Start Menu, Accessories, System Tools, Scandisk.

Check "Thourogh" and check the box that says "Automatically Fix Errors" and click "Start" then wait a few hours for the thing to check for problems on the hard drive.

Take the Hard drive, and smack it downwards onto your hand a few times, make sure your holding it right side up, and wack it down a few times.

Sounds to me like you misplaced an arm in the Hard drive, you can also try spinning the hardrive on a hard flat surface.

If that dosen't work, then freeze the hardrive overnoght, and then put it in while it's still cold and boot up.

Thinkpads are not ment to be dropped, or mabey you'v learned that already. your lucky it boots at all.

Hope helps.

Errrm..Don't go smacking the HDD; a few gentle taps could be beneficial...But nothing involving the palm of your hand hitting the HDD case hard.

I know tapping works sometimes, but of all the weird HDDs I have seen...Not one issue was fixed by the fridge.

well should I bring it to some kind of computer shop. What do you think the cost would be?

thanks

If you have high speed internet, you could try downloading and using this Ultimate Boot CD:

http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/

It has many useful tools all on 1 CD. Including tools to help repair or access your CD.

As for taking it to a shop...is the information on it critical? If not, then a replacement HD would probably bee cheaper than an hour's worth of service in most repair shops.

PC Magazine has a good article about recovering data using OnTrack. They charge $100 to tell you what they can get and how much it will cost, and that ranges from $400 to $2000. And you still have to buy a new hard drive.

If the data's not important, a new hard drive is a lot cheaper ($60 depending on capacity), but installing all your old software will take time.
