Wheel on wheelmouse not working

#1 Post by think@pad » Fri Jan 27, 2006 7:38 am

I´m using a logitech wheelmouse connected to the PS/2 port on my TP600, but I can´t get the mouse wheel work. It didn´t work with the default mouse driver, so I tried with logitech mouseware drivers, but to no avail. Is there anything to do about it?

Have you tried disabling the trackpoint? I don't think a wheel on a PS/2 mouse will work if the trackpoint is also enabled (certainly the case on my X24 anyway). A USB wheel mouse works OK.

I have tried all means I have been able to think of. I haven´t found a way to disable the trackpoint on the TP 600. There is no such option in bios.

I'm surprised that there is no option to disable the TrackPoint in the 600 BIOS -- later models like the 600E and 600X include such an option.

Have you tried to use the ThinkPad Configuration utility? This is a way of changing BIOS settings from within Windows, and it may include options that are not available in your built-in BIOS editor.

I am running a Logitech Mouse with a wheel attached through a PS/2 port on my 600X without any problems, and I've used various models of the Logitech mice in a similar arrangement on a 770E, 770Z, and 600X, all without difficulty, so there must be a way around your problem.

Thank you pkiff, disabling the TrackPoint using the Configuration Utility enabled the wheel on the wheelmouse. It´s a little bit annoying, though, that you can´t have both options enabled at the same time. I have to try what happens if I don´t have a PS/2 mouse at hand and need the TrackPoint device? Do I have to boot, enable the TrackPoint and reboot in order to have a pointing device?

Yes, that sounds like it would be annoying. I can't speak for the ThinkPad 600, but later models like the 600E/X include three options for the TrackPoint in the Configuration Utility: Enable, Disable, and Auto-Enable [later edit: should be Auto-Disable - see below]. The Auto-Enable setting is supposed to help fix exactly the sort of situation you describe -- it will be enabled if there is no mouse attached but will automatically disable itself if a PS2 mouse is detected.

Another easy workaround is to get a USB mouse. I have a Microsoft Optical Wheel mouse that I bought at MicroCenter for about $15 and it works great. No problems at all.

Thank you again pkiff! Actually it´s called auto disable, but I guess that should do it :) The USB mouse isn´t a good option here, as the TP600 has only one USB slot, and I need it for the memory stick. Anyway, now everything is fine. Thanks for your help!

:D This forum is fantastic. I just searched for "mouse" and "wheel" because I was having the EXACT same problem on my TP600 with the middle wheel of the mouse.

The solution is right there. No hassle. No worries. Thanks!
I have a ThinkPad 600 (2645-45U) with a 300 MHz processor. I'm running Windows 98SE.

I did the same thing. Alphakilo470 saw me get one myself and I love it. USB mice are great thing to have because they will work with both PC and Mac. MY is setup with my desktop, but when I'm on the road, I take it with me to use with my 600E.
I have finally rejoined the dark side.
