My dad has a 770ed laptop. when ever i boot it up i get a windows bsod. Some of the things that i would like to get working are:
1. How to boot to a memtest86 cd. i get the 8000 error
2 dissable/remove the on-booard ram
3. if i can put a bigger than 8 gig hdd in it.
4. anyother updates including the processor.
5 the bsod is 0x0000001e "kmode_exception_not_handled"

Thankyou
Brian

Well I can only offer a little info to you as I'm certainly not an expert. I presently run a 14GM HDD in my 770ED, so I know you can go bigger than HDD that you've got in there. I also managed to upgrade my processor to a 400 MHz processor. You have to find the right processor, which can take a little bit of hunting. And disassembling the laptop is a relatively involved procedure. There's more information available on this forum, just search for it. Good luck.

According to one Microsoft page, this indicates that you had/have a backdoor trojan: Error Message: STOP 0x00000001e KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED in Win32k.sys

I don't know if this is true or not, but if so, then maybe everything is fine with your 770ED except that you've got some virus(es)/trojan(s).
3. if i can put a bigger than 8 gig hdd in it.
The 770ED can handle any current hard drives -- at least up to 80-100GB or so, but you will probably have to make sure that you have the latest BIOS installed. I've got a 32GB in my 770ED running Windows 98SE no problems.

I am still getting the stop error even with an ubuntu live cd. Is it possible that a bad video card would cause it? Some of the caps and resistors are falling off of the card if it is the thing under the battery.

Thanks,
Brian
