760 hard drive replacement

I have an old 760e and a 760 el. I wanted to clone the drive in the 760e for use in the 760 el. After the copying the old drive, neither laptop will reconize the cloned drive. I have the latest bios update. The laptop just doesn't even see the hard drive. I even hooked the cloned drive up to my desktop and was able to boot from it (with errors for bad drivers). It is only the thinkpads that won't detect the drive. I thought the drive might have been damaged but have aquired 3 replacement drives, all with the same problem. What am I missing?

What size is the cloned drive? More than 6GB and you need to get around the 760's BIOS limitations... apparently. I'm looking into it.
... the file mentioned in this thread might do the trick:

Where were the HDs installed when you performed the cloning? Laptop or desktop?

What program did you use to perform the clone?
