I inherited a Thinkpad 600 from my son that has a formatted hard dirive, but no operating system. I would like to install Windows 98 from an old CD that I have. The machine came with a floppy drive and a CD rom drive, but I can't seem to boot from the CD.
Any suggestions would be greatfully appreciated.

Turn the machine on while holding the F1 key. This will boot the machine into EZ Setup (BIOS). When the EZ setup window opens, click on the box called "Start up", then click on the box called "Power-on". This will take you into the Start up order screen. Click "Reset" in the upper right side. This will clear the boot order. Then just click on the pics in the order that you would like them to boot. Generally it should be FDD-1, CDROM, then HDD-1.
If you need more info on your system, here is the
Hardware Maintenance Manual.

In addition to the answer above, not all '98 cd's are bootable.
Is your CD in good shape, and unscratched?
Is your CD a "factory" CD, and not a burned copy?
What does it say on the front of the CD?
NONE of the W98 "upgrade" cd's will boot. These say "upgrade" on the front. Don't confuse an "upgrade" CD with the "update" cd that updated Windows 98 "first edition) to 98SE.
PROBABLY NONE of the so called "RETAIL" 98 cd's will boot.
ALL of the so called "OEM" cds WILL BOOT. Thes say on the front something to the effect "for distribution only with a new PC"
