I have a TP 600E which keeps giving me this error message when trying to boot. I think it has to do with the trackpoint but I havent figured out how to deal with it.

Any ideas?

yes is the trackpoint

there is apparently a way of disabling the trackpoint on boot up. Seems this is the cause of the error. Am not sure I can go thru replacing the keyboard.

Get into EasySetup (press and hold F1 before powering on), go to Config.
Once in Config, press Ctrl + D to get into the CMOS hex editor. Go to the 3rd row, 1st column (20 - 0) and change value to "01". Save (F2, I think) and exit (ESC). Exit Config and power off.

Your machine should now boot without the 8611 error and your TrackPoint is now disabled.

:o really easy when you know how. I have done that and it seems to be booting normally now.

Thanks a million. :)

Hi, hjulian,

You are a lifesaver. I had the same problem and your "bypass" works great!

What I want to know is . . .
How did you learn how to do this? This info is not in the Hardware Maintenance Manual. Where would one go to learn about the other elements in this code and how to make other adjustments?

Thanks, again!

Some of the moderators in this forum have the knowledge and access to the datasheets of all of these ThinkPads. They also know how the motherboard understands the code in this CMOS editor and they will give you answers according to the problem you are having.

Just post it here and I am sure somebody will give you an answer.

You should do all the research you can before posting your issue here, the 8611 error had already been solved a long time ago.

Glad I could help!

I did check and searched for it, saw several workarounds but could not for the life of me understand what a CMOS editor was till you came along. Once again, thanks a million.
