760XL sound port problem, Win 2000

Does anyone know a fix for this problem? If I let Windows media player run long enough, under Win 2000 , I can't shut media player down. It continues to play the internet radio stream I was listening to and won't allow changes. Even task manager can't kill it. Usually I can shut down the laptop but sometimes I have to use reset. If it only runs a few minutes every thing is fine. I don't think I had this problem under Win98 but that was a long time ago.
