Journey to the centre of the thinkpad

#1 Post by tattaloop » Tue Mar 07, 2006 8:54 am

I started with a 770x with 4gig HDD, 300mhz P2, 127meg memory, with Win and Umsdos Linux.

First I got a 60gig HDD and just put Linux on it. Don't like Win. It's my mother's TP and if she wants to use Win, I can put the old HDD back.

Inspired by this forum I then started on the CPU. I got a 366mhz P2 for GBP8 from ebay. Good route to take for the first attempt, because the FSB stays at the same speed.

This worked, so I got a 500mhz P3 and 2 127meg sodimms. I used the TP built in BIOS editor to get over the error 127 problem. I can't exactly remember how I found out about that, but it was from the TP600 threads in this forum. I also found out there about pIIIcache, the linux software that brings back the L2 cache.

All is working now. My mother has not paid the ransome, so I might try getting a faster CPU.

BTW, the P3 was delivered before the memory, so I discovered that Samsung PC66 memory works fine with a 100mhz FSB
