Newbie with questions

#1 Post by Mausea » Tue Mar 07, 2006 9:40 am

I just received a ThinkPad 760CD yesterday. I am scratching my head today wondering what on earth I can do with it at this point. I was hoping to put my wireless adapter on it but there is no USB port. I have an adapter to convert the ps2 to usb but it doesn't seem to recognize it or my flash drive. I can't seem to find specs anywhere on it as far as upgrade ability.. i.e. ram capacity etc.

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Thanks!

I have a large Acrobat file with spec sheets for lots of models (I think I found out about this on this site). Anyway, there is a page for the 760CD. Assuming the file is not locked (I didn't look), I can extract the one Acrobat page on the 760CD and PM it to you. Let me know...

PS/2 to USB adaptors only work for mice.

I have a ThinkPad 760E that spends it's elderly days as a print server/backup system. I also keep a few games on it as well as Microsoft Office so I can kill time when I'm unable to get near an outlet since the 760E's battery still lasts up to three hours and the 600E I own has no battery.

These old laptops can be quite useful if you set them up right. I used a 760ED as my main laptop until I got my 600E from a fellow forum member. The 760ED has 64mb RAM and a 20gb hard drive when I used it, I had Windows 98SE, Winamp, MS Office XP and Firefox, everything ran alright, if not a little sluggish at times. As long as you don't plan to run any big games, you could probably get by with your old computer for minor day to day work.

I also have a 380ED with a P166MMX in it and 80mb RAM and 3gb hard drive, it's on permanent loan status to a classmate who plays old DOS and Win 3.1 games, surfs the web and does schoolwork on it on a daily basis.

I'll have to agree with AlphaKilo470 in that the 760 is a great jumping off point to ThinkPads in general. I'll have to warn you though, that it can be extremely addictive and lead to quite a bit of time spent "playing around" with ThinkPads in general!

If you look on the bottom of your notebook, you should see a 4 digit number such as (9545 for example) followed by a 3 place alpha-numeric sequence (U9A) for instance, so the whole thing will end up looking like 9545-U9A. With this number you can look up the specs in a number of places such as this forum.

On your other question, you'll have to use a PCMCIA WiFi adapter that has hardware specs that include your machine's.

A few years ago, after getting out of the IT word and not having to travel any more, I thought my days of using laptops were over. My wife went back to school and as luck would have it we got pregnant at the same time. So I scrownged around and came up with an old 760ED for her to write papers with in the comfort of her recliner. She's now on her 3rd, and I'm on my 4th ThinkPads since then and we don't even have a desktop in our house!
