What kind of harddrive will work in a thinkpad 600x?

Older ThinkPads.. from the 600, the 7xx, the iSeries, 300, 500, the Transnote and, of course, the 701

#1 Post by crazyforsax » Thu Mar 16, 2006 6:56 pm

Hi ,

My thinkpad 600x has been acting very wierd. I'm going to need a new harddrive for it. I want a 15-20 gb one. Does anyone have any suggestion
My main concern is price IT HAS TO BE UNDER 40.00! Will I need to use the old drive for anything? The case I heard somewhere, I'm not sure!

You'll need the Hard Drive Caddy from your old hard drive...4 screws and it comes right off...

Check Ebay there's thousands of HDD's there for laptops..I just got a 10 gig for $25...

You will need the metal housing and the 4 screws. The HDD is 'pasted' to a white plastic sheet in the housing and you will have to remove it carefully. I would suggest after removing the screws, try to remove the HDD from the plastic sheet by pulling it up from the front (not the connector side) while holding the metal housing down.

I read in another thread that these ThinkPads (600 series) will take HDDs up to 138 GB. I am myself using a 60 GB HDD from Hitachi (7200 rpm, UDMA4 or ATA66).

Good luck!

Almost all 2.5" IDE hard drives should work in your ThinkPad. Currently, I'm using a 40gb Toshiba MK-4026GAX and before that I had a 20gb Fujitsu drive.
ThinkPad T60: 2GHZ CD T2500, 3gb RAM, 14.1" XGA, 60gb 7k100, Win 7 Ult
Latitude E7250: i5 5300U 2.3ghz, 12gb RAM, 12" 1080p touch, 256gb SSD, Win 10

Well, as long as they're not too tall. One of the old drives out of my old 380XD is too tall to fit the 600X, either in the regular spot, or the ultraslimbay.

Yes, they have to be 12.5mm or thinner. Some older Thinkpads had 17mm drives.

I strongly recommend 5K100 40G harddisk for you.

Very fast and quiet. We just move one 40G 5K100 from 600E to T23, but will buy another for 600X in next week.
