Need advice on 240 hard drive

Hello,

I just picked up a 240 for ultra mega super duper portability.

I need to get an OS on it.

The harddrive it came with is not formatted.

It is a Hitachi TravelStar 20 GigaByte 4200 RPM drive.

I just ordered a 1.44" floppy drive for this computer.

I will be installing the OS using a Win98 boot disk to fdisk and then format the drive. Then I will remove the drive from the laptop and connect it to my desktop via a 2.5" to 3.5" adapter. I will transfer the Win I386 folder over to the drive. Then reinstall the drive and run the setup from the hard drive. I plan to install Win XP.

Is this correct?

Also, is the Hitachi TravelStar 20 GB 4200 RPM drive fast enough? Can somebody suggest a good 5400 RPM or 7200 RPM to upgrade to?

Thank You All

I used a boot floppy which contained many different formatting/disk utilities (that I found one the web) to format the drive (fat32) and then used a different network booting floppy to access a shared volume on another PC where I had copied the Win2K installer.

The installer automatically reformatted the FAT32 partition to be NTFS and installed Windows.

Not the fastest installation, but easy (once I'd located boot floppies that worked with my PCMCIA NIC).

Rahulio1989300e, the I386 method you described seems to work for some people but not for others. I tried it on an X20 but failed. If you get it to work on your TP240, please let us know!

I've just got an Hitatchi 5400rpm 40gb for my TP240 and at the mo, I can't get it to work. :(

Installed Win2000 via my desktop with a 3.5 to 2.5 adaptor, which worked a treat with the old 6gb I got with it. But not with the 40gb......
