Thinkpad 600E and Wireless Dynamic IP Problems Win XP

I upgraded my 600e from ME to XP Pro Service Pack 2. I am using a dlink 650+ with the latest drivers from Dlink.
Prior to my Upgrade(?) I was able to use a dynamically assigned IP address (and consequently be able to roam to Hotspots etc when my hearts desired). However when I try and use a dynamic IP I get an address for a few seconds it is then dropped and I get a message seeking a new IP got one then dropped ... continually cycling through this parade of getting and dropping. THis configuration worked under ME dynamic IP I mean.
I have tried all of the suggested disabling windows controlling this card, Win Zero configuration Service disable etc etc etc... . NO go in so far as a Dynamic IP.
If I select a static IP all is well with a good to strong signal
I am totally purplexed
Thank you for any help
