How large of a hard drive and memory will the IBM760 C take.

#1 Post by Tom Starich » Wed May 12, 2004 7:40 am

Greetings,

I am upgrading a IBM 760 C for my daughter and will be loading WIN 98 SE and that vintage of software on the laptop. Can any one tell me how big of a hard drive I can install in the machine?
I was looking for a Bios update on the ibm website and only found a Japanese Bios. Of course I will need the latest and greatest bios if anyone knows what this Bios version is that would be helpful too.

If you have a hard drive that will fit it perhaps you may want to sell it to me. Thankyou for your time to consider my question and reply.

Does any one have experience getting > 40 MB in the 760C

#5 Post by tomstarich » Thu May 27, 2004 9:59 am

My 760C has 40MB of memory right now. (8MB on the mother board and two 16MB chips on an adaptor card that fits into the bottom of the unit)

I hoped the model C would take more memory than 40MB, but the documentation seems to indicate that it 40MB was the limit. It seems like the next models of the 760 that came out may have taken more memory but this one only lists 40MB as the max.

Does anyone have any experience getting more than 40MB of Memory in the 760C (model C the 120 mhz thingy without the CD ROM)?
If So what part numbers did you use and were you able to use SDMemory? :)

760 E/ED/ELD dimm card doesn't fit the 760C

#6 Post by tomstarich » Fri Jun 25, 2004 8:12 pm

The 760C was a rare beast. It uses 88 pin memory and a different dimm card.

When I tried to install the dimm card used for the 760E/ED/EL/ELD it simply physically doesn't fit. The thickness of the card with the memory installed is too big to press down into the space in the back of the computer meant to hold the dimm card.

I had hoped to use the new and improved dimm card and the 144 pin memory but no such luck. For thoes who follow me

I suggest thoes that follow stay with the 88pin memory meant for the 760C and the following part numbers from Ibm

8 Mb EDO SODIMM Non-parity 88pin 70ns FRU 29H9287
16Mb EDO SODIMM Non-parity 88pin 70ns FRU 29H9288

There may be other part numbers and other manufacturers, but if the computer ever shows hardware problems that may or may not be related to memory.

Ibm will not necessarily want to give you technical support on the machine until you are using their memory. So you may want to buy ibm if you feel the need to get tech support from them on their laptops.

The 760C model 9546-U28 memory max is 40 mb

#7 Post by tomstarich » Fri Jun 25, 2004 8:26 pm

According to the specs on the detailed specifications page for the 760C model 9546 type U28. The computer will take is 40mb and no more.

Be sure not to order 144pin memory any memory for this computer that has a key or knotch cut into the memory simm.

This model takes 88 pin memory as follows:

8 built into the dimm board
plus two 16mb chips for a total of = 40mb

Able to fit a 6 gig hard drive into my 760C smoothly

#8 Post by tomstarich » Fri Jun 25, 2004 8:40 pm

Purchase price off ebay was about $65 shipped to the door for a 6 gig hard drive that fit smoothly into my 760C. Format and Win98SE install not a problem.
