Hi,
My 770's main battery's been dead for a long time but always use the laptop at home thru electrical power. The CMOS battery was just changed to a fresh one. Now what I get is the 161 163 error code which I alredy know the meaning. When I press enter it just give me the 161 163 code and pointing to the book and going nowhere.

Please help, I need the laptop very badly.

I think those error codes normally point to a CMOS error, so first thing to do is doublecheck that you've installed the new CMOS battery correctly (with the right polarity facing up) and that it is supplying a good voltage (test with a volt meter if possible).

You might also try:

1. remove your main battery pack and try to boot up without it installed
(your main battery pack may be not just dead but now actually damaged and if so, can cause damage to your mainboard)

2. press ESC or F1 when the error screen shows up
(you can sometimes go ahead with booting despite errors and depending on the issue, Windows may work okay after you skip past the errors)

Thanks for the fast reply. Unfortunately I tried each step you mentioned and nothing works. If you still have some more tips I'll be very glad to hear them. Also from other people who had this problem and solved.

Go into the BIOS and reset your Date and Time!

Yeah,the year is probably reading 2040 or something like that...Set the date/time,that will fix the errors...

Supervisor password set, certainly if you can not get to easysetup using F1. Many users do not realize that a supervisor password was set by someone (usually the last owner/user for used laptops) until the cmos battery runs out. If you search these forums, there are short and long answers given to resolve the issue for unknown supervisor password.

In this instance Phil, the OP stated that he had just changed his CMOS battery, ergo the Date and Time were lost.

He has to go into EZSetup and reset the date and time, then initialize the machine and restart.

For the OP, to enter EZSetup on a 770: Press and hold F1; then turn on the computer. Hold F1 until the “Easy-Setup” menu appears.

Hello,
My biggest problem is I cannot even go to the EZsetup by pressing the F1 while powering-on. Is there any other way to do this going to the EZsetup? It always brings me to the error page and nowhere.

F1 from the error page..Or try the escape key...I know there's a way to do it, it's not easy but pushing keys should do it,eventually...

I had the same problem.
- If you enter a wrong password, it refuses it
- If you enter empty password, you go to the Bios screen ERROR and you can't continue.

The only way to set the date/time is to enter the right supervisor password, not an empty password.

Dude replace the batter, the battery is dead all you need is a new cmos battery and than go into the bios and change the date and it should work. DOnt make it hard on ur self
