problem installing ram

howdy

i just bought a stick of 128 mb pc-100 ram, apparently new, and stuck it in my 770x. when i booted it up, the screen came up as usual and it recognized the ram (261xxx instead of 130xxx ram ok) but then it didn't go any further...

when i removed the ram, it booted fine...

i tried switching the slots of the 64 pc66 and the 128 pc100...no dice...

is this a faulty stick of ram? or do i have to somehow update the bios?

The machine used pc66 ram. pc100 will frequently work, but isn't GUARANTEED to be backwards compatible. The 261xxx sounds right, you've probably got 64M built-in, then there's your 64M dimm, and 128M dimm for a total of 256M.

You could also try using JUST the 128M dimm, sometimes two different dimms just don't get along.

tried taking out the pc66 64 mb stick, still didn't work. the computer recognizes it, but refuses to boot up. normally the computer beeps and the hard drive kicks in, but neither of those are happening.

is there a way if i can tell if it's just incompatible, or bad ram? if it's bad, then i need to return it. if it's incompatible, then i'll just sell it. i bought it on ebay, so i sort of need to know.

would appreciate any assistance!
