Hi!

My Thinkapd 600x(5FU) has weird sound problem. I didn't recognize this before
becuase I've just been using speaker on palm rest. I can't almost hear voice part
from movies or mp3 audio when I use earphone. Other sound effects are fine
but there are some sizzles like too much compressed mp3 audio.

I guessed this problem belongs to software driver but two OS windows 2000 and
Linux were same. This symptom can be fixed with power off and on but comes out
again when I play the movies or mp3s. And in this case, fn+volume up/down beep
is only 1/3 level as compared with normal beep sound.

Thinkpad 600x(5FU)
Latest BIOS(I don't remember that version is now)
850 MHz
576MB RAM/30GB HDD

Windows 2000 pro/Debian sid(2.6.16)

Help me please.

Make sure the software volume control for the microphone (line input) is turned off.

I checked it and tried again but it didn't work

You've got your sound setup for surround. For speakers or headphones, you can use this setting:

Control Panel, Sound and Audio Devices, Volume tab, Speaker Settings frame, Advanced.

On that dialog, select Laptop stereo speakers... or Stereo headphones if you like. Either should work.

I'll check my 5FU to see if the mixer has any strange settings.

Looking again at what you wrote, the DVD playback software may be trying to set up surround sound. Set that to stereo. If that doesn't work or isn't available, select the stereo (2.0 or 2.1) audio track instead of surround (5.1, 6.1, 7.1).
