First 600E trying to bring back to operational status.
Great site, I just got my first 600E model 2645-8AU off ebay. I am waiting on floppy drive but so far everything cool. Replaced the cmos battery to eliminate the 161,163 error. It came with only 32 ram I upped to 288. It has only 6gig but will up that to 30-40gig soon. Need to get a new battery too. I have previously owned a 770 and did the same thing bringing back alive in 2003. I might attempt a cpu upgrade in the future.

Indeed, with simple upgrades, an old computer like your 600E can still perform most of the tasks that most people need!

I also recently got a base 600E from eBay and upgraded it to a P3 500mhz cpu, 256mb ram, and a 40gb hdd.
It's great for sitting on the couch checking email, surfing the web, etc. If I want to play games I go to the desktop. However, my desire for gaming is waning as I get older. So far, the 600E is perfect for my needs.

bosco,
After you upgraded the 600e to a P3 500mhz, how much hotter did the thing get? Any instabilities? I'm curious about this, as my 600e is a mere 300mhz Pentium 2.
These CPUs are real cheap on eBay right now, and I'm always ripping open and hacking my computers, this seems like a fun project.

I upgraded a 600e to 500 mhz..I love these 600's,so easy to work on and they're tough as hell...
BTW when I did my upgrade I put alittle Artic Silver on the CPU/heatsink and I haven't had any over heating problems..

No problems at all. It runs great. I used the stock fan with the attached thermal pad and it's fine. Mine was originally a 366mhz.chubes wrote:bosco,

I bought another 600E from eBay for my wife and found a 650mhz speedstep cpu cheap. I haven't received either yet, but I'll probably use some Arctic Silver on the 650mhz cpu just in case.
Anyone know how to get a speedstep cpu run at full speed in a 600E? There's another thread where someone says that Win 2k Pro will run it at full speed. I'm hoping that's the case since that's what I'm using.
Bosco: In the other thread I posted how I forced my juiced up 600x's to run at the higher speedstep speeds...I have NO idea if it will work on a 600e...But if the speedstep is software/CPU driven it MIGHT work on a 600e..
