Hi
Just been given a 365X with 1GB hard drive 40mb RAM and 1MB Video and was supprised on how well it worked.
It had Windows95 on it and so I upgraded it to Windows 98. All works fine except I can only set the laptop screen to 600x800 in 256 colors.
Is this the only option available or can I get it to display 16bit or any better color as I woud like to display photos on it?
If so how?
Have tried vftpgw9x.exe downloaded from IBM.
It is saying i am running adapter Cyber 9320 PCI and I have set the advanced display properties to Windows generic Laptop screen 600x800

800x600 is as high as it goes so you are stuck there. I'm not sure how high the color goes but it can't be any higher than 16bit.

Happy with the 600x800 but 256 colors means that any Photos look like Andy Warhol pictures.

16bit would be fine but I just don't seem to be able to get it to work.

I'm running WIN98SE on my 365x and it definitely supports 16-bit color; that's what I'm using. I am running the Microsoft drivers that came with WIN98SE... I'm not using any video drivers I got from IBM.

I suspect some sort of problem when upgrading from WIN95 to WIN98, but I'm just speculating. I would uninstall the current drivers, then have your 365x look for "new" (Microsoft) drivers on your WIN98 CD.

I unintalled the drivers and reinstalled them with not difference.

Can you look at what adapter and monitor is set up on your 365X

My adapter is
Trident Cyber 9320 PCI with 1MB memory.

but when the monitor is reinstalled it says it is an unknown monitor.
If I knew what to look for it may help.

I have the exact same adapter listed as you do. I think your monitor setting is the problem. Mine says "default." I'm not sure how I got that, but if you follow the prompts to change your monitor, under Standard Monitor Types you'll see a number of 800 x 600, some for laptops. I bet if you experiment with trying these, you'll find one that works. "Unknown" probably means it's running in some sort of very basic mode that's only 256 colors.

In the display settings, on the same screen that lets you set resolution and color, click the button that says "Advanced" and click the tap on the window that opens that says performance and make sure the slider is set to "Full" which will be all the way on the right.

Tried different displays to no avail also checked performance is set to full still no joy.

Could be because I am using Windows98 Plus edition and not full blown SE version.

Will see if I can get one to try updateing drivers.

There are two displays for the 365X/XD.

One is a TFT display, which has nice contrast and will do 16-bit color.

The other one is DSTN, a much cheaper technology with only 256 colors available.

Go to IBM's FTP site at: ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/pc/pcinstitute/psref/

and download "twbook.pdf". Find your model-type code from the back of the machine (in format 2625-XXX), and look up the XXX section in the pdf file. This should tell you which display you have...
