600E original hard drive

#1 Post by dsigma6 » Wed Apr 26, 2006 6:31 pm

Hey guys, anyone know the specs on the original 6GB HD the 600E came with- looking for the RPMs to see how much of an upgrade I should look for.

Thanks.

The original is 4200RPM. If you are looking to upgrade, I'd make sure the drive has 5400rpm or better spin speed (7200rpm is the fastest I know of that you can get in a laptop) and I'd also make sure that the data buffer is 8mb or better.

I'd look at the 5400rpm and 7200rpm drives that Hitachi has to offer as well as the selection Fujitsu has to offer as those two brands are the ones I've had the best experiences with.

Be aware, however that when I upgraded the Hard drive to a 60gb 5400rpm drive, the temps during heavy acess are almost too much. I would be very weary of putting a 7200 rpm drive in my older machine such as this one, it seems that they just dont have the cooling capacity to deal with the faster, hotter running drives, not to mention the battery drain it wouls have!
