600e IDE problem

Hi,
I'm having a problem with my 600e, I thought it was the 10gig drive going bad, so I bought a new drive (40gig toshiba), and when I try and install Debian on it, the partitioner only sees 8gigs. I thought it might be a BIOS issue, so I upgraded the bios to the latest I could find for this model, but that didn't help.
Even worse, if I try and lay down a partition and a filesystem, it doesn't seem to "stick". That is, it makes the filesystem fine, but if I try and mount it, I get an "invalid argument".
This poor thing, I've replaced everything on it, has the IDE controller gone now too?
I really love the keyboard and form of this machine, should I just cave and buy a 600x?
Thanks for any help
