600e IDE problem

Hi,

I'm having a problem with my 600e, I thought it was the 10gig drive going bad, so I bought a new drive (40gig toshiba), and when I try and install Debian on it, the partitioner only sees 8gigs. I thought it might be a BIOS issue, so I upgraded the bios to the latest I could find for this model, but that didn't help.

Even worse, if I try and lay down a partition and a filesystem, it doesn't seem to "stick". That is, it makes the filesystem fine, but if I try and mount it, I get an "invalid argument".

This poor thing, I've replaced everything on it, has the IDE controller gone now too?

I really love the keyboard and form of this machine, should I just cave and buy a 600x?

Thanks for any help

Yes you should, but go get a 2005 or 2006 Thinkpad, get some thing nice so you dont have to keep buying used thinkpads that die. :D

old thinkpads don't die unless someone stuffs with them ,but the newer ones do even if no tampering were done, you see i am running a 8yold 200mmx 765d on wifi in its original battery today, just as the missus runs a tp600e on wifi (very effectively)i like to see if a centrino can run wifi full time cranking out multiple applications, whilst downloading streams ,no hibernation,no black screens,no hdd powerdown just pure full speed apps just over 2.5 hrs from one single 4 yold battery as the tp600e can do!
a centrino would be lucky to manage 60 minutes, better yet the tp600e like the 765d can run 2 batteries together,
drop em and they still work, put a proper supported hitachi 7,200rpm 40 gb hdd with the latest bios and watch the fully supported tp600e on, wifi outperform any centrino laptop in the planet (even with less ram)as far as geniune mpbs downloads are concerned try a geniune 1284 mbps from a 1500mbps line saturation, full driver supprted second to none it is the clear why the earlier thinkpads
run like swiss watches when idiots don't breakem.
treat em properly and they go forever and bloody faaast too
on wifi. . 8)
