770 MEMORY SLOT ONE BAD

After extensive testing and gnashing of teeth, I've isolated the problem in my "new" 770: Memory slot one is bad. Not so bad that you can't post and get a successful memory test, but bad enough to cause constant freezes once warmed up.

This is compounded by the fact that slot 2 only recognises half of a 128mb stick of RAM. Max memory is 96mb.

I've tried cleaning with a tootbrush, etc. but no luck. The machine is VERY clean so it's a shame. All I can come up with is to change the mainboard, sell or use as is--it's just adequate.

Any other suggestions are highly welcomed.

This may be a stupid question, but are you sure the Ram stick it's self is not bad?

What are the specs of the ram? If the second slot if only reading half, then you might be using the wrong speed ram.

If this is a vanilla 770, then you can use either EDO ram, or PC66....not sure about PC100.

To answer both questions:
I did start out with PC100 RAM, but when I ran into these problems, switched to PC66 RAM. I've tried 4 different sticks in slot one and the machine always freezes, but no problems when only slot 2 is used. The RAM works fine and is fully recognized in another machine, but that's a 770X, I don't have another plain 770 to test with.
