Sound problems
I'm not recieving any sound this just happened recently and when i try to get volume control it doesn't appear. i went to thinkpad configuration and then went to audio it said i have no resources for this device. It was working fine yesterday. Any help would be appreciated . Thank You
It is difficult to diagnose your problem or offer solutions without more information. For example, what model of ThinkPad are you using and what Operating System are you running? Have you installed any new hardware recently?
But regardless, it sounds like an installation/configuration problem to me. My suggestion would be to try simply rebooting and see if that helps. If not, then try re-installing the sound drivers for your sound card.

I would try re-installing the audio drivers. Note that there are different packages for different models. You can locate the latest drivers by checking under "Audio" on the Software and Device Drivers - ThinkPad 600 page.

unfortunately there are no stand alone win 2k/xp/2k3 audio drivers for the 600 thinkpads,(only nt4,w9xetc)only way possible to get them is to snatch em from the temp directory during microsoft driver update period is progressing
fortunately i snatched these drivers which saves the need to reload win xp,in an event of an audio driver registry failure.
they work beaut but do lack a couple of the features the native and earlier drivers incorporate,or if hware is the problem the get a usb audio stick which performs superior to the original crystal audio card,on the cheap

No problem. Bear in mind that I don't know if this will help, as you stated originally that your audio was working fine just the day before and then suddenly stopped working for no reason. As of yet, there is no viable theory to explain why your audio stopped working for no reason.
My recommendation is to re-install the audio driver package. There are different versions available for different kinds of 600 machines, so if you have a 600E or 600X then the following link is not the correct one for you. If you have a plain old 600, then this is the package you want:
Audio driver package for Windows 95/98 - ThinkPad 380, 385, 560X/Z, 600, 770/E/ED
Follow the instructions provided on that page, install, and then report back. Note that you are supposed to uninstall the drivers first, and then when you reboot, you will be prompted to install them again.

Hopefully I am not confusing this process with modem driver that is installed. I haven't used 98SE in over a year on a 600E.
When you run the Setup.exe file, it will ask you if you want to uninstall the Crystal Audio Drivers. Choose yes/ok, and it will uninstall them automatically for you. Then the system will reboot, when it does, it will tell you that it found new hardware. It will ask you to choose a location, then just shoose where you saved the files (Disk 1 I think), and then it will tell you to insert Disk #2. At this point, direct it to the DISK 2 folder and press OK. Then the set up will finish the install.

Hmm...well, now you have a second potential problem to add to your original audio problem. You may or may not be able to get your audio working properly again without a Windows CD or the original Windows files, we'll see. With any luck, you actually have the files you need already on your hard drive, so you don't actually need the Windows CD for anything.
Many laptops running Windows 98SE have a copy of all the core files from the Windows 98 CD (including all the drivers and core files) stored in a special folder named "CABS". This folder can be located in several different places. You can try looking in C:\CABS or C:\WINDOWS\CABS or C:\WINDOWS\OPTIONS\CABS. This CABS folder will have a bunch of very large files with the extension *.cab . If you can find these files, then whenever your system asks for your Windows 98 CD, you can instead point to that folder, and it will extract whatever files it needs from your "CABS" files.
You say that when you "restarated it said insert disc windows 95/98". Does it do this everytime you restart Windows? If not, then I would try installing the audio files again, using the correct instructions and files.
Getting back to the audio, then, you said "When i go to run setup.exe it says i don't have that file". This means you did something wrong or you are not using the correct file. I can't tell what file you used or what you did with it. The correct audio device drivers for the 600E under Windows 98SE are located here:

Can you explain again what you did? When you are explaining an error message, please quote the entire message and explain exactly where you are at in the installation process when the error appears. I don't understand what part of the installation process you were at when you got the file not found error.When i tried to install cryatal audio i typed in C;\DRIVERS\W9X\AUDIO it said CW BASE SYS. couldn't be found i typed in cab file and it said cwb audiobin could not be found
Did you manage to run "SETUP.EXE" or have you not got that far yet? You shouldn't type in the file name or directory name, you should use the "Browse" function to find it. Start Button -> Run -> Browse...and then use that to locate the file named "SETUP.EXE" in the folder wherever you saved it after you double-clicked on the "aftpcw9x.exe" file you downloaded from IBM.
When you are giving file names, can you give the exact file name, spelled exactly the way it appears in the message? These files should not have any spaces like "CW BASE SYS." What is the exact name of this file? "cwbase.sys" maybe? There is a file called "cwbase.sys" in the Windows 98SE cab file named "DRIVER20.CAB". During installation, you might also be able to point to one of your system folders in the hopes that the file is located there: i.e. try pointing to C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM or C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32.
I don't know what you mean by this. What file checker? What problem? I would ignore this unless you think you haven't downloaded the correct file from IBM.Iwent through file checker and setupx.dll had problem
I think the problem you are having is related to not pointing to the correct directories for the files you need to load. I might be wrong, but that is the first issue to try to sort out before moving to more complicated solutions I think.

Sorry i haven't gotten back to you i'm on library computer since my modem doesn't work on my computer. I'll have to try to figure out how to fix it on my own or take it to a repair shop. I think if i had someone who knew about thinkpads they cold fix it in a half hour. Well thanks for all the help anyway.
