560X RAM capacity and problem

#1 Post by Michael16a16a » Sat May 06, 2006 7:17 am

I have looked very carefully through all the posts/fora to see if this topic is covered in full but I don't think so. I gather that the max cap for RAM was usually understated and that larger RAM could sometimes work. I fitted 128M to 560X and system ( and FreeRAM ) only recognises 32M. When I refit 64M, sytem still only recognises 32M. I have used latest BIOS update available from Lenovo. I have read some posts about removal of original integral 4M RAM to allow upgrades to work. Now I would settle for getting the 64M to work if I can't get the 128M to go.
Michael.

ahem....

you know that you need edo-ram for the 560x...

sdram won't work.

i haven't found any edo-modules larger than 64 mb (never seen them on desktop-rigs, too), that's why the ram is maxed out at 96mb.

Woe is me for I am an ignoramus and a Luddite.
I got the 128 RAM out of a dead Dell Inspiron. Will this be the wrong sort?
Assuming it is wrong, how do I get the pc to recognise the old 64M?

?

so, you had 64mb (32 soldered and one 32mb module), then you took out the 32mb module, tried with a 128mb sdram module, and then put back in the 32mb module and it didn't work anymore?

could be you fried the ram bank... (but i don't think so. maybe it didn't fit right in?)

the right ram would be:

64mb edo @ ebay.co.uk

and, i didn't look hard enough... here's a 128mb edo:

128mb edo @ ebay.co.uk

the problem with this one could be the height of 44 mm. i don't know if it fits into the 560x .

i'll measure the area around the ram-slot tomorrow. maybe i'll buy one myself and try it in my 560x or my 380xd...

forget the 128mb module: with 44 mm of height it's "just" 10 mm too long... won't fit because of the bios-battery and one other ic on the board.

remains only the 64mb module...

Apolgies for the long delay in replying.
What you said was correct. The larger RAM I had was SDD out of the Dell.
I had to reload windows before the thinkpad could find the memory properly and now it is running with 64mb, 32 internal and 32 plugged in. Curioulsy when I tried the 128 in another dell to see if it was faulty it reported EDO memory in slot 2, so although Ih ave sorted the thinkpad I am left wondering if this memory has some fault. Particularly as when I put the SDD back in the Dell which I had removed to carry out the test it now cannot recognise the memory. Is it possible that the 128 has some sort of bug which affects the Pc's into which I plug It?
