770 2nd Hard Drive Caddy - something's missing!!

#1 Post by Turbovend » Mon May 08, 2006 6:22 pm

OK I'm sure someone can answer this. I bought a 2nd hard drive caddy for the 770 series, eBay pictured here:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 6877072970

The auction said "It can handle any 770 size drive." Well, the connections do not match so apparently there is still a cable or something required. Also, a standard notebook drive will fit in the space alright, but not by any means snug. It's just sitting in there loose, sloshing around. What am I missing? Shouldn't this guy have included all the parts necessary to "plug and play"?

Dissapointed, to say the least.

What you bought is a special adapter to put a 2nd hard drive in a Thinkpad 770. It is a very useful item. (I have one.)

You still need the actual hard drive caddy. It's basically a perforated, steel box with the inside connector that mates to the hard drive and the outisde connector that mates to the connector inside the laptop (or inside your 2nd hard drive adapter). It will also take up the "slop" between your hard drive and the adapter (or inside your laptop).

Someone in the forum may have one to sell you at a reasonable price.

I see.... I wish the auction had explained that. This means I need a caddy for my caddy!! D'oh!!!!

I'm refurbing a bunch of 770 series right now (7) and NONE of them have hard drive caddies, so the caddies are a precious commodity for me. I only have ONE right now. I wasn't expecting to have to give one up for this. Darn.

I also have 17 untested notebook drives. I WAS going to use this adapter to insert them in the one working laptop that has the only HDD caddy in it, then use WIN2K to try to partition and format and test them.

I really DO need a bunch of caddies, but they are expensive for what they are. They cost nearly as much as a hard drive itself. In fact, on eBay you can get some smaller hard drives for less than the price of the caddies!

Is there a proper place on this forum to place a "wanted" ad for caddies?

thanx
