PMF40002002AA vs PMF40002001AA Thinkpad 600 CPU Upgrade
Hallo again,
i've been wandering around the differect aspects of a TP 600 CPU Upgrade and i realised that inside this forum, there is a 400mhz MMC-1 CPU PMF40002002AA usually named and in the other hand i do not seem to be able to find information on this specific CPU wherever i looked for it. ( Intel, Yahoo, Google, ebay e.t.c. ).
Instead of this one i've seen many referrals to the PMF40002001AA, MMC-1 400mhz CPU usually coming from a Toshiba Tecra 800 model that sounds like it would work for my thinkpad. I found this one in prices ranging from 20USD to 75EUR ( ebay ).
Is there really any difference between them? Does PMF40002002AA CPU really exist or is it some kind of a ghost?
Thank you in advance.
John

There are 2 MMC-1 400mhz CPU's...One is the PII that you mentioned, that will work in a TP 600..
The other is a MMC-1 Celeron..They will NOT work in a TP 600...
Here's a link on how to indentify Intel CPU's..It looks like there is no difference between the 01 and 02 modules you mentioned..It's just a revision number:

Ok, thanks!
Got it and bought it from ebay, for 29USD plus shipping. Seems like a good deal. Once i'll install it, i'll post my impressions.
Other things that are on their way to join my old TP600 are 256MB of ram that should arrive tommorrow, plus the 600E/X video out card+TP770 cable.
Is there really any limitation on the hard disk size for a TP600? I already have a 20gb disk (4200rpm), but i also have a 40gb disk lying no my desk ( coming from my ex-TP A30 ) that i may give a chance.
With this configuration at last ( 400mhz, 288MB, 20gb disk, 13,3tft ) would it be good idea to even move from Win98se to WinXP (pro/home)???
Thank you very much for your help!!

Wow..Thats a great price for a MMC1 400...They are rare,it wasn't long ago that they were selling on Eay for $50-60...
That config should run XP alright, just don't expect blazing speed...IMHO I would use Win2000,I feel it runs 'snappier' on these 600's.. But others disagree.
Good Luck....

I've upgraded a few 600e's and x's...I did do 1 600 about 5 months ago..At the time there were no 400's on Ebay but a Yahoo search turned up one seller who had them, for about $80 including shipping..
I ended up buying a 366 MMC-1 off of Ebay for around $45 including shipping..
For the hell of it about 2 months ago I checked Ebay again, one guy had the 400's for $49 ,I forgot the shipping costs now...So $29 for a 400 is a great price..
Let us know how you make out....

Video upgrade?
Tell me about the 600E/X video out card. I did not know that was possible.Kowalski wrote:Other things that are on their way to join my old TP600 are 256MB of ram that should arrive tommorrow, plus the 600E/X video out card+TP770 cable.
I recently upgraded my 600 with a PII 366, max RAM, DVD and Win XP. I really think XP is faster than 2000 on this machine.
Hallo to all of you,
here's the link of the CPU on ebay:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... %3AIT&rd=1
The cost as you can see was really $29. Today i got a shipping quote from the seller for $15 ( it's Greece, remember?) still i think it's great price.
Just for the record, i made an ebay query using the Intel part number PMF40002002AA & PMF40002001AA searching in descriptions too ( worldwide search of cource )
I just received the ram, it should be in the laptop in the afternoon.
As for the video out, i've found the following article followed by pictures some time ago in altavista.com search.
We already know the video out option it's a small sud-card FRU 10L1192. This is normally for the 600E/600X series.
Still, there is a small covered hole in all 600s on our right hand side. As soon as you unscrew the bottom cover, there is a slot to place the 10L1192 on the motherboard. It goes in with two screws.
You fit everything and close the bottom part with the screws back again. At next login, the card should be recognised and be able to work.
As for the cable from 770x (FRU 85G1897) , seems to be the same as the 600 video out cable, it just offers s-video out also, which really gives better signal on the tv that the RCA style component out of the 600 series cable .
Last but not least, in order to be able to play DVDs without any problem i threw in a PCMCIA card, MARGI DVD-to-GO that really does the job with almost not cost at all ( ebay 4.5 USD plus 9 USD shipping - taken apart from a DELL laptop )
Additionally, i also bought a BNIB internal ZIP 250 drive for the 600, since i happen to have in place, a lot of zip 250 disks from older times. The cost was 9 Euros + 5 Euros shipping from Germany. Maybe stupid move, still it was not expencive at all so i thought to go for it. Received it today, box was completely sealed as promised by the seller.
So, how about the hard disk? Anyone tried a bigger than 20gb on a 600, even in 5400 or 7200 rpm speeds? Wiill these ones work on TP600?
As for the OS, i think i'll go for Win2000 professional. ( it offers USB support as long as i remember )
Except for the above, if someone happens to know a way to add additional ram in the 600, just throw in the specs required.
Thank you very much all of you.

1) HDD..I am using a 40g 5400 on this 600x..As long as you make sure you have the latest BIOS on your TP600 you should be able to use a 40g or 60g....
2) RAM----Man now you are asking a LOT
... If you've looked around this forum you'll notice that there is NO hard and fast rule on how any 600 series machine will handle RAM...Some people get PC133 to work, some can't.. Manytimes a 600 will only 'see' half of a 128mb or 256mb stick...I no longer have the TP600 I upgraded,so I'm working from memory, which isn't that good anymore..
But here goes...Many people here say they have got PC133 128mb to work in their 600's,I could NOT...But I did find a seller on Ebay who was selling what he advertised as :low density,PC 66 and/OR PC 100 CL2 and/or CL3 256mb RAM..So I bought a stick, and it worked..So I had that 256,plus a PC66 64 stick, plus the 32MB built in memory.. And it worked fine..Now other people here have had NO luck getting any 256mb memory to work in their TP600's..
So keep that in mind,if you take a chance and buy a 256 stick, there's a good chance it won't work or your machine will just see 128mb...

1) HDD - I have a 40GB 5400rpm in my 600 working great. This addition made more difference than the CPU upgrade from 266 to 366 I think.
2) I've had major problems getting 2 128MB sticks to work. Currently I have 1 128MB and 1 32MB genuine IBM PC66 in the machine and another 128MB on the way from ebay. I'm hoping the IBM sticks will do the trick. PC100 and PC133 would not work in my 600.
Really the only downside with the TP600 is the video card. Everything else works great and is reasonably fast. I have a wireless card in mine and it works fine for internet access and general email and Microsoft Office duties.

I just tested my new memory modules on my TP600. I also noted that they are PC100 and not PC66 as the seller claimed them to be. Nevertheless they were IBM FRU parts taken from another laptop and not just other brand or even noname.
I finally confronted the problem most of 600 owners seem to have as i reaf in the forum. Each single ram module would work just fine in the first Dimm slot ( the one with the 32mb underneath ). Every one of them will work with just the half of its size when put in the second slot ( near the case screw ). Same thing with 2 more modules i have from an older 770x.
Consequently, putting both dimms in their slots, will only conclude to 224mb of working ram. The rest of it ( up to 288 ) seems to be present in the bios system configuration, still not being able to operate normally.
Read many articles around the forum, did not mention any "scientific" point of view, just some methods like putting some piece of paper underneeat or even above the module in order to see all of the ram amount. I really wish even these to work but they don't.
I am a little confused right now, my TP600 is not even an older one but a later model with the 440BX chip. I went through the HM Manual again and again but did not find anything.
In any case, this fact seems a bit strange to me since IBM mentioned from the very beggining that TP600 would support 128x2 + 32 =288mb of ram. there should be a solution to this one. Not a hw but a sw or fw one.
I am thinking of sending them an email, describing the problem, if it happens for anyone that would concern answering it with a proper solution.
As for the disk, i'll go for a 5k probably at 40gb.
That's all from me for now, i'll be posting more soon. I do not think i'll rest unless i find a way to make ram work.
The funniest of all was when i thre in a 256mb module PC133 from my TP A30! of course the laptop would not boot, still there were exactly detected by the system. I guess that if i get to find a PC66 or even PC100 256mb module to check it, i'll be selling back the 128 ones, and getting 256 modules.
Even with the existing problem, the whole ram amount would end up to : 256( first slot ok ) + 128( second slot half ) + 32 (integrated) = 416mb.
Of course if a way to have full amount of memory is found, then an additional 128 will follow ending up to 544Mb! ( amazing isn't it? )
After all, i strongly believe that PC66 256MB ram would surelly be operating, since it's usual for ibm to address less ram size dimms in their Harware Maintenance official manuals. Same thing happens with A31p i own. IBM claims that only 512mb ram modules would work, still 1gb modules does the job just fine, ending up to 2gb of memory.
I guess we'll see to it sooner or later...

As I stated previously I did get a PC66 256 stick to work in my TP600.. But again, from what I've read there is NO guarantee so be careful..If I remember correctly the stick costs about $45 USD,so they're not cheap..After all, i strongly believe that PC66 256MB ram would surelly be operating,

Hallo again,
a fist attempt to reach a solution is the following e-mail i just sent to Lenovo support Team with the appropriate form :
Dear Sirs,
me and many other friends from the world known forum www.thinkpads.com , have the same problem with the Thinkpad 600.
The system will not recognise all of the ram amount. Being more specific, the IBM memory module of 128mb, will not be recognised by the memory bank ( the one that does not have the onboard memory integrated underneath)
This means that having a total of 288mb of ram the system only recognises as usable the 224mb of ram.
This is something that should have a solution since IBM claims in your Hardware Maintenance Manual that a total of 288MB of ram using 2x128mb memory modules, original IBM FRU Parts, can be used. Take notice that the memory modules are PC66 specification indeed.
Please indicate a solution to this problem.

I hope someone gets to answer my question or i'll post again.
I hope you can excuse possible language mistakes, since this is not my mother language.

Hallo,
Still no answer from IBM. As for the RAM modules they are original FRU IBM parts indeed. The fact is that they are PC100 and not PC66.
I then guess you have a point here...
Still, do i have to buy 2 more modules, pc66 this time of course ,in order to be sure that they work in my laptop? Hmmm, in case they don't, i'll be ending up with 2 sets of 256 mb ram modules, not willing to cooperate.
Anyway, i may give it a try as soon as i find a reasonable price on ebay. Most of the sellers try to charge more shipping cost to Greece than the actual ram cost itself.
Let me check it a bit, and if anyone happens to know any site selling internationally on reasonable prices and shipping costs, please, let me know.
