BSOD

just wondering how often other 600 series users get the BSOD?
i gave mine to my girlfriend, and the first time she used it, blue screened when she shut it down. she said she didnt do anything, but i dont want her to think i gave her a defective laptop!
EDIT:
i've read that the memory for this unit should have 8 black chips on each side- mine have 4- perhaps that is why i get the BSOD? even though i had it sometimes before i added memory.

Only the Low Density 256mb sticks have to have 8 chips on each side. The 128mb sticks have 4 on each side.
The 600/600Es that I have worked on haven't had too many blue screens, unless there was either a memory or software problem.
Do you know what the error was?

i dont know the error but ill keep looking for the next one.
it has a 256mb chip with 4 chips on each side. that seems like it could be the culprit. i didnt know the difference when i bought it, and the price was right!

Yep,sounds like high density memory.. Thats ptobably your problem...

does high density pose a greater risk than just the occasional BSOD? could that fry the motherboard?

It will most likely just cause stability problems with the OS, but it is very unlikely that it could cause physical damage.
The only extreme possibility that I could think of, would be the system locking up and overheating, but again very unlikely.

As TFF said it's HIGHLY unlikely the wrong memory type will cause damage. The worse I can think of happening is one of the BSOD screwing Windows up so much that you may have to re-load Windows.. That happened to me once on one of the many 600's I've been playing with .. I was swapping sticks in and out of one of these 600's and got a few BSOD's.. Finally after a BSOD Win2000 wouldn't load,I had to format and start again...
