My new 390X

Hey Folks,

I'm new here because a friend I work with gave me his old IBM 390X with 450mhz cpu and 128 ram.

I've tried searching for my answers but haven't come up with what I'm looking for and calling IBM didn't help.

What is the maximum size hard drive I can replace the stock 12gig with? I'd like to go buy a 100 gig. I want this laptop to be a large mp3 player for my camping trips.

And what is the maximum amount of ram I can put into this laptop? I'd like to get it up to 512mb.

80gb will do for sure, had it myself. 100 should do, too.

to get to 512 mb ram you need 2 so-dimms with each 16 chips (!). had one of them in my x21 with the same chipset.

Basically anything that will work in a lower end T2x will work. Actually all the PC100 bus RAM is the correct spec. Some after-market manufacturers like Kingston listed all IBM PC100 RAM as 390x model.

Thanks. I installed my 100 gig hdd today and it works fine. I plan on picking up a 256meg stick soon from my computer shop. They sell PC100 and PC133. I'll probably going to just grab the 100. But the 133mhz ram is actually cheaper. Will the ram automatically clock down to 100mhz? If so I'll just get the PC133 sticks and save a few bucks.

if you're able to bring it back in case of incompatibility, give it a try.

i had pc-133 in my x21, but i also remember threads about compatibility issues with pc-133 and series 600 thinkpads, which also use the 440bx chipset...
