ThinkPad 701C Memory - 64MB Availability?
ThinkPad 701C Memory - 64MB Availability?
I understand that there is a 64MB RAM chip that I can use to upgrade my 701C, but I don't have any leads on where to get one, and I suspect they are now super-rare.
From what I can gather, I'm looking for:
64MB 72pin 3.3v 70ns SO DIMM FPM/EDO
non-Parity, non-ECC chip with some kind of proprietary design
Can anyone who has one confirm that these specs are right?
The Kahlon website is selling compatible 32MB modules for $21 USD, but they do not list a 64MB part. Nothing appears available on eBay that I can find. The eBay seller cuiinc who sells the AMD 133MHz 701 upgrade board does not seem to be responding to my questions of whether they have any compatible 64MB chips.
There is some discussion of the 64MB module in two earlier threads:
Thinkpad 701 Ram upgrade?
and
IBM Thinkpad 701CS Question
Anyone know whether any of these 64MB chips still exist anywhere or if there is a way I can search for them using some other part number?
Phil.

Every now and then cuiinc would offer some on eBay and they'd sell out in a very short time. That's where I got mine, as well as the 133MHz MB.
All I can say is keep watching eBay, they come up occasionally.

James

Cuinnc delivering parts to Europe
Not a very pertinent question, but does anybody know whether cuinnc delivers to Europe? Spain in particular.
Thanks.
Thanks.

Bought one a month or two ago from cuiinc, along with the 5x86 133MHz bottom system board upgrade. Both are working nicely in my 701cs, which now can run 98lite faster than it used to run Win95b.
One thing to be aware of is that the 64MB DIMM seems to be a tiny bit wider than the originals. Fits in the socket just fine, but a tad too wide to fit down through the SODIMM door on the bottom of the chassis. I had to disassemble again to plug it into the bottom system board *before* mounting the board on the chassis. After that everything worked fine.
I see he's got another one for sale now. Go to his eBay profile and click the items for sale link.

If you haven't disassembled your butterfly before, you'd also do well to get the IBM field tech instructional video DVD from him as well as the service manual. They really helped a lot! And also be sure to get yourself a Torx T1 and a Torx T6 screwdriver. They're the only ones that fit the screws!
Best of luck!

Gonna bring this thread back from the dead to ask a question in hopes anyone who bought this is still around...
cuiinc is no more on ebay... does anyone know the part number of this 64M module? Any Pictures? ANY other info at all?
Is it this one?: FRU 19L7175
And if anyone knows anything on the 133 upgrade... was it an existing board or was it a solder replacement upgrade?

Re: ThinkPad 701C Memory - 64MB Availability?
CPUs are soldered in a 701x model, So it's a full mobo upgrade.
I have several 144-pin 64MB PC-66 RAM modules (no IBM P/N or FRU):
1x MH8S64BBKD-10L, Japan 92895R7 (Mitsubishi)
2x MT8LSDT864HG-662B3 (Micron)
All three of them have 8 chips (4 on each side).
For a reasonable price they could be yours, if they fit the bill.

Re: ThinkPad 701C Memory - 64MB Availability?
I believe what is required by the 701C are 72 pin FPM (Fast Page Mode) or EDO (Extended Data Out) modules, as opposed to the 144 pin SDRAMs that are the MT8LSDT864HG and MH8S64BBKD. This is from looking at the old PSREF file on the 700 series systems.

Ray is correct...
If I'm not mistaken it's EDO RAM....will look over the weekend for a spare I have and post the results...

Re: ThinkPad 701C Memory - 64MB Availability?
The 16M FRU googles to:
92G7264 - IBM THINKPAD 16MB 72PIN SODIMM 70NS 3.3V NP FPM 4MX32
& 32M...
92G7284 - IBM THINKPAD 32MB 72PIN SODIMM 60NS 3.3V NP 8Mx32
And from another post in pipermail...
8, 16, or 32 MB SO-DIMM
60 ns refresh
3.3 v
Non-Parity
72 Pin
Low Power
the book doesn't state FPM or EDO...
Found one user who had Kingston 32MB (KTM-TP701/32 - 32MB FPM DRAM Non-Parity 72-Pin SODIMM)
and another Kingston 8MB (KTM-TP701/8 - 8MB FP Non-Parity 72-Pin SODIMM)
Haven't found one reference to either of the 2 FRU's i researched that list an EDO part... just the FPM
So, tricky area... EDO was brand new in 95, only some motherboards were "EDO tolerent", does the 701 have the hardware to support EDO?, most listings on the net either dont specify or list as FPM.
From all looks of it... 64MB FPM NP 60ns 72pin SODIMM 16Mx32 3.3v is the answer... ?
well, dunno how to read this, but it looks like going to 64MB does have it's issues as well...
http://translate.google.com/translate?j ... axMem2.htm
One thing for sure is hibernation quits working, then there is something about the video framebuffer and directly accessing memory and expecting a max of 40MB... but an elusive TP701MEM.SYS apparently fixes that to enable 64k colors when using dos/win... anyone got this file?
And on the 133 CPU... anyone know of a professional who sells surface mount soldering services?
