suspend, Windows 98 SE, TP Configuration program

#1 Post by jsuebersax » Thu Jun 15, 2006 2:29 pm

So far I've not been able to implement suspend mode on my TP 600 when I run W98 SE. I thought downloading the ThinkPad Configuration program would help.

So I downloaded and installed it (the installation itself is very quirky) then ran it.

Somehow this has entirely removed the possibility of going into suspend mode! It's not even an option in the Power Management menu of the Configuration program. It's even disappeared from my usual Windows Power Management menu!

Questions:

1. Has anyone else found this?
2. Is *anybody* running W98 SE on a TP 600 able to get suspend mode?
3. Will I be able to uninstall the Configuration program? Is there any reason to keep it?

Not me, on a 600X, nor do I think it is the norm for a plain vanilla 600.

Most everyone, I would think. Again, though, I'm speaking more from experience with the 600X models.

There should be no reason to remove it in 98SE. It provides you with access to a number of options not otherwise available through the Windows interface without going into your BIOS directly - e.g., better control of brightness of LCD, hardware level enable/disable of TrackPoint.

Have you installed the Power Management drivers/tools? Those are much more likely to have an effect on the Suspend function. Regardless of what appears on your Start menu, you should be able to suspend by pressing Fn-F4. What happens when you press that key combination?

It sounds like you have a bad install of the utility program. Normally, you should be able to uninstall via the Control Panel's Add/Remove Programs feature.

But before you do that, is there a ThinkPad icon down in the system tray? Is there an entry in your Start Menu for Programs/ThinkPad? If so, you should be able to launch the utility program. Once you do that (if you can), click on the Power Management icon on the left side of the utility window and see if you get the Suspend/Resume Options, Power Mode, Advanced Settings, Beeps/Alarms, and Hibernation tabs.

As Phil suggests, try the Fn+F4 keypress combination. Does that make the laptop enter standby mode? You should see a progress bar next to an icon of a disk drive (if RediSafe is enabled) and then hear the fan and disk drive spin down. You can wake up the laptop by pressing the Fn key or by opening the lid (if you have closed it). Hibernate mode can be done with an Fn+F12 keypress. To wake up from that, you will have to cycle the power switch.
