iseries 1411 CD drive removal

#1 Post by rnfolsom » Thu Jun 29, 2006 4:00 am

I have an iseries 1411, bought new in about 1999. Its CD drive was rarely used (software installation only), but has become more and more "flaky": The drawer has to be pushed in just right or else the CD itself is not recognized. And "just right" is not consistent: sometimes pushing on the middle of the drawer, sometimes pushing at one end of the drawer; sometimes slamming it in, other times being very gentle.

The problem has now gotten so bad that the CD drive almost never works, and computer basically doesn't have a CD drive.

This 1411 now gets no use (replaced last fall by an A31, with which my wife is very happy), so I am thinking of passing the 1411 on to someone else. But without a working CD drive the computer is not very useful.

However, my daughter gave me her 1411 whose motherboard is dead (does nothing when turned on, not even an initial IBM Thinkpad screen), with the thought that I could remove its CD drive and put it into the working-except-for-CD 1411.

However, I do not see how to remove the dead 1411's CD drive, much less see how to put it into the working 1411.

Any suggestions (or an information source for 1411 CD drive replacement) would be much appreciated.

I would try reading through the Hardware Maintenance Manual. There are details on how to remove/replace each and every FRU in the i1400.

I didn't know such a manual existed. Thank you, and thanks for the link.
