ThinkPad 600E and SpeedStep mod

Hello,
I have a 650 MHz SS, currently running at 500 MHz. Now I want to do the SpeedStep mod. I read the very interesting thread at Wim's BIOS. But I am a little bit confused.
When I have done the SpeedStep mod with the 2.2k ohm resistor, how can I make it run at full speed ?
Sharedoc wrote: boot from battery + keep processor cooling air output closed during boot. Is this working? Should I always cover the cooler vent while powering on? Can I only boot at full speed with battery?
Thanks for help,
Harald

I found the Deepsleep utility. Should I use this software for full speed?

I just recently upgraded my 600e to a 650MHz chip as well. I've tried the deep sleep utility and read every post in the thread at wim's BIOS.
As far as I can tell the 650 is an anomoly and won't work the same way as the other chips. There's a post from someone in the thread that couldn't get his 650 working at full speed either. Unfortunately, the creator of the speedstep mod's only advice was to get a chip with a different speed.
I've accepted that and am fine staying at 540MHz (500 + 108MHz bus).

Oops ! Bad news
Has someone done this SpeedStep mod successfully ?

Has someone done this SpeedStep mod successfully ?
I did that mod on two TP770X, one with PIII-800 and the other with PIII-600. Both worked just fine. The circuit pattern is slightly different between these two MMC-2 modules. But I could figure out where to modify and make both of them run at the higher clock reliably.

Please, can you give me some hints:

I think he was asking if anyone's done it successfully on a 650MHz chip... My searching has only found 3 cases of people using the 650 chip. This one, the one in the WM BIOS thread and my own experience. None of them seem to work with the speedtep mod provided by sharedoc.

I personally suspect that there should not be any significant difference between PIII-650 and others. But what you are saying may be true. If he wants to hear specifically about 650MHz CPU, there is nothing I can say because I don't have it.
Please, can you give me some hints:
Please clarify what kind of problem you are facing and what kind of hints you want. I really don't have much to say because I simply followed Sharedoc's instruction given in the Wim's bios BBS and it just worked like a charm.
If your problem is about heat dissipation, my machine is different from yours so I cannot give you any hint.
If you are asking if I'm using Deepsleep utility, yes, I am. This is an essencial utility to set the clock to the high performance mode.

Thank you ! Yes, my question is, how to set the clock to the high performance mode.
I was a little bit confused, because I read: "cover the cooler vent while powering on". This cannot be the solution to run at full speed, or can it ?

I am confused too.
All I did was to modify the circuit of the MMC-2 card as instructed in Sharedoc's BBS and launch DeepSleep Utility when booting up. That's all. The system runs at the higher frequency with no failure at all. Presence of a battery, covering the cooler vent or anything else don't matter.

Thank you ! Now it is clear !
I read this very good site for ThinkPad mods:
http://www.katch.dsl.pipex.com/mtb/mods.htm
But the last sentences, regarding "cover the cooler vent", should be replaced with the DeepSleep utility.

covering the cooler vent was a method they found helped make the chip run at full speed (before the deepsleep utility was written).
They thought it had to do with overheating the chip which would cause it to go into a low power mode and when it came out of it, it would run at full speed.
I've tried both with my 650 and neither makes it run at full speed. I'm not sure what the difference between the 650's and the other chips is but there does seem to be a difference.

every 650 i tried to date works ok @702 mghz(with fsb mod),deepsleep program and sharedocs speedstep hack
its far more reliable that oem dodgy intel/ibm/microsofts speedstep arrangment on the sluggier tp600x counterpat machine(period).

Can I still "step down" the CPU speed to, say 500MHz, for battery saving after the speedstep mod?
or it will stay at highest speed all the time after mod?
How is the battery life for 650 compare with 500?

Basically no. Once the speedstep mod is made, you can always go the high performance mode simply by launching DeepSleep utility, but not the way around.
The only way that I know to step down the CPU speed is to put the system into hibanate, then wake up. If you do this, the CPU speed will "sometimes" be set to the lower clock, but sometimes stay high. This probability depends on each individual unit so I cant say anything about the repeatability.

just like shined explained.will boot at 500 nice and clean then you can trigger to 650 in windows with deepsleep progarm afterwards.the beauty of this arrangment is it will boot on 500 no hiccups whatsoever in xp pro +2003 server,
regardless of battery or no battery (unlike tp600x which will never ever run the faster speed with flat, dud or incompatable batterys/thats why tp600e are so popular with sharedoc hack mod +deepsleep utility (+ they run faster timings /overclock options, run low density higher compatable onboard ram ,even @ 108 fsb more times than not)compared to 600x counterparts which run inferior +cheaper onboard high density ram with the sluggier timings programmed into them which hinder grahpics performance moreso than the 600e variants at identical speeds,fn-f8 prompts, driver seaching in windows etc etc

i look forward to my 918 mghz 600e hybrid
but thats another story

the tp600e heatsink is good for 702mgz max.
as for reverting back to slower speed you will have to suspend or hibernate the pc in order to switch back to 500 from 650,however you will also have to reactivate cache via powerleap, then again if you want cooler running cpu and longer battery life, leave the cache
disabled ,500mghz will still do the job no sweat.
conversely i have not seen any improvement in battery life when i set the cpu to run for max battery @250mghz

500 with no cache is way way faster than 250 with full cache enabled.consider the pro's +conn's + choose whats best for your enviroment.

This is [later clarification: by This is, I meant my post is] drifting off-topic and not related to the OP's question about 600E, but for other readers in this thread I thought I should note that many people with factory speedstep 600X's do not have any of the problems serverbook identifies with that model.

depending if one can relate to the differences between company manipulative profit schemes to lure more battery sales
in the same process or proven innovations that revert to total control over cpu processor regardless of battery condition,
point being its easier than setting up a 600x to run full speeds in xp pro + a damm lot cheaper too
no speedstep machine in the planet will run full speed on flat ,dud or incompatable battery(period)

off topic? was merely explaining why many hware/software modders prefer tp600e instead of tp600x for reasons stated above as you know very few know the trick to run speedstep cpus correctly with xp pro.
i offered my input in hope to assist others like i that really do things the hard way, conversely not one soul has gone out of their way to explain how to precisely setup speedstep app, power managment, specific settings for hassle free boot because no one
knew how to select the other damm cpu in device manager to get the ball rolling in the first hand.
hell,i remmember a few years back when a trader in ebay listed a very neat 850 powered 650 x ,at the time i was deadset broke so i couldnt afford the resonable ask, however i was really impressed with his efforts(at the time being the fastest 600 sereis in the planet

,emailed the seller firstly to let him know what a great effort to run the worlds fastest at the time 600 sereis laptop then sincerely asked him what were the cpu temps like at those speeds only to be snubbed by the tight azz because he chose to hoard the info for his sorry azz
am i one of those men? like hell i am
fortunately i discovered the way around WIN XP cpu driver issue for tp600x and other similar models with speedstep cpus then broadcasted developments on the net at various forums to
break the good news ,in fine detail, nothing lacking,
before listing a rare 1 off listing for a pittance $10us to provide
a service to help someone else run xp pro properly with their speedstep mmc2/mpga2 cpu( equipped machine(just to see if i can quantify a portion of time out of my life) before deciding to ditch the listing because i felt guilty in doing so) so how does this relate to the topic?
YOU WORK IT OUT CHAMP
i only hope there are others out there whom appreciate my intent to provide truthfull usefull info and dirscern for undertsanding ,unlike the tight azzes i come across my time
