screen: dark area

Hello Thinkpad community,
I own a Thinkpad 570 that has a dark screen-area with its centre showing in the middle of the right border of the screen, gradually becoming lighter towards the edges of the area.
It still shows fairly well what's underneath, so it isn't extremely dark. The area takes up about 1/5th of the screen's width and 1/3 of its height (speaking from memory).
The screen has no other defects I know of, although the previous owner warned me about white lines showing when the display gets hot (Maybe this must mean really hot, then).
The dark area is visible all the time.
Any ideas on what may be the cause?
Is there a chance it can be repaired without being replaced?
Thanks in advance!
